Hi again orvil,
Welcome back to the forum - I hope to see you here more often in the future, and not only when you need computer help. If you only return to us when you've got computer problems we will be unable to continue to provide a computer support community.

This is a known problem with the hardware and Microsoft should repair it if it is still under warranty. However you might want to give the towel method a try instead.

You don't need to be technical to help the site - you could refer some friends, post in the off topic lounge [located at http://www.compuforums.org/lounge/] or even become a Premium Member and help towards the spiralling hosting costs [ Premium Membership ]

As for the towel method, follow these steps:

1) Unplug all of the cables apart from the power cables
2) Wrap the Xbox in a few big towels, so that it is completley smothered
3) Turn on the power and leave for around 20 minutes in the towels
4) Unplug the power and leave to cool down for at least 30 minutes
5) Plug everything back in and hopefully it should start working.

I'm not sure what does it, but it seemed to work for my friend after reading online about it. The longer you leave the towels on, the longer it remains fixed, although usually it should be a permanent one.

I hope you'll be visiting this site more often in the future

when my bro's xbox 360 broke, it showed 3 red lights. after some research i was told it meant a motherboard and HDD failure (i think that was wrong, but oh well). we sent it off, and within a week they replaced it. unfortunately, it broke again, and we again sent it off. i returned home from school later that week, to find out that they had replaced the old with a new elite, and we got a free game. apparently this seems to be happening a lot, so xbox have extended their warranty from 1 year to 3.

it is often either cause by movements (drops, kicks, sudden jolts...), or over-heating (which happens a lot with Xbox 360's)

thanks

Yeah - if the Xbox is less than 3 years old [has the 360 even been out that long] you might want to investigate if you can return it. You may as well have a new unit rather than a temperamental one.

YES!!! always go for a new unit, if you receive your old one (but 'fixed') chances are there will be another problem to encounter within the next week.

also, Xbox 360's haven't been out for 3 years, so all are still in warranty!

thanks

Microsoft have now implied a new 3 year warranty on all machines other than the elite due to hardware failures within the system.....this being caused by the chinese skimming the board with as little as the protective heat glue as they can to save themsleves money......https://service.xbox.com/default.aspx Is the Register & Repair line for X-box 360's.....This is where a local parcel force comapny will come pick up your console and take i away to be reapired,,,,,its all in the link.....i also have one with the 3 red lights thats waiting for uplift to be repaired

Well i'm sorry to say sir that your son's xbox is toast. The xbox's failure rate is fairly high. It hasn't happened to me...yet. I would sent it in and they will send you a refurb which will take approximatly six weeks. Sorry about the bad news.

hi dude 3 rings with red lights is called "3 rings of death" i mod xboxs and i know just about everything there is to know about xboxs and xbox 360. if anybody has any questions about the microsoft game consoles ask me i will be more than happy to answer any questions. as for the 3 rings of death, there is absoloutly no way to fix it. you either get a new one from the place that you bought it or you send it to microsoft and they repair it and send it back to you. you need to call and request a box to send it in. call them and you can work out the details. good luck
