Default i'm stumped...

I'll admit, i know next to nothing about networking. i put a 56k modem in the new computer i built, and the system recognizes it, but i can't get it to access the internet. i can't find a free aol cd anywhere seeing as how they stopped mass shipments, and the download page only lets you install to the computer that is downloading the installer. is there a way for me to connect my desktop to my laptop via cat5e and use a desktop passthrough? or do you have a better suggestion? or do i need to dig through the landfill for an aol cd?

I don't have time now to give a proper response, but yes it can be done. What OS is on the original PC? How many NIC's does it have? why can't you use a Right-click and SAVE the file to a flash drive? (do this on the download link that starts the actual download) Or chose SAVE instead of RUN.

After my daughter's football game (cheerleader) tonight, I can say a lot more, as it stands, I'm on my way out the door.

Hopefully someone can answer you better, sooner.

Where do you live?! Go to the nearest BestBuy and on the Customer Service counter they should carry the AOL CD. But why would you want to use A O Smell. They are auwful and charge way to much! try going with a cheaper service. The dialup speeds will be the same. The only other advise I can give is to get high speed service.

Default Hi

At first I really didn't need high speed internet so I just used one modem and bought a Linksys router and used it with all my pc's. Might be the cheapest way if you don't need high speed.

After spending around a week on dialup, I really cannot see how anyone could live with it.

dial up is ok if you like doing things like watching the grass grow and you have eternity to download something. I switched to highspeed primarily because the kids needed it to do their homework/ school projects. Dialup was just too slow for that. After switching to high speed it is hard to believe I was satisfied with dialup. In addition to the time consuming download times the connection problems were irritating.

My old modem used to make a big <CLICK> sound when I got kicked off. How I hated that noise...

at least there is always the soothing sound of getting reconnected on dial up.

if you call that sound soothing

besides, i don't know why you guys are badgering me about my internet connection speed, but i should be getting a dsl line hooked up shortly. so i'll likely never hear that sound again.
