Can you describe the sort of network you are trying to set up - do you mean two computers connected directly to each other through Ethernet?

What OS are all of these computers running?
Note that with this setup, the computer connected to the cable modem will need to be on for the other one's internet to function. It may be simpler to just use a router - or if your cable modem has both USB and Ethernet ports, some modems let you use both at the same time.

Does your cable modem have a USB port and an Ethernet port?

There is nothing wrong with running a router, they are extremely easy to set up and it doesn't need to be wireless. This sort of setup can be very problematic.

Now, please tell us which computer is running Win2K and which is running XP. Also please note this rule:

Quote:
Community Spirit:
If you are here for computer help, then help others here if you know the answers to their questions. Don't just take from the community. If you are not very computer literate, then you can post in our general off-topic, non-computer forums [ http://www.compuforums.org/general/ ]. Also you can refer your friends to the site, and if you find us helpful, consider a premium membership and help contribute to the site running costs with a small fee in exchange for special privileges [ Premium Membership ]. If you, a member of the community cannot help the community, then the community cannot help you. If you however insist on only posting in relation to your own computer problems, then you will politely be asked to find help yourself if you cannot help us, which is a very easy thing to do in exchange for the time taken to research your problem and provide an effective solution for free.

Do you have a "crossover" cable between the 2 computers or just standard CAT5/6 cable?

In order to network two compters directly, you have to use a crossover cable, where pins 1,2,3,6 go to pins 3,6,1,2.

Basically, one is transmits and the other recieves..

Good Luck!
