| We have 4 computers networked together using a switch, and we use one of the computers to store important files, documents, etc. Lately some of the computers get the message "No more connections can be made to this remote computer at this time b/c there are already as many connections as the computer can accept." This prevents a couple of people from accessing necassary files and documents. After about 30min, all computers can continue to access the main computer without any problems. Any ideas on what causes this issue? |

| Where would I find services and license logging? |
| ||||
| Try going to Control Panel [in classic view] > Administration Tools > Services [ the wording might be different ]

Specifically that if the machine he is using as a file server is XP home, pro, it has a low limit on the number of NETBIOS connections (file and print sharing). If they are using the computer as a file and print server, it is possible that the number of netbios connections goes above(or meets actually) the limitation, and stays there till the connection is closed (his example of the 30 minute time limit, and I don't remember the timeout off the top of my head). XP home limits netbios connections to 5, and pro to 10 (inbound). So the best option is to get windows 2003 server which has a higher limit (again depending on version)., or to get another little machine to share the file sharing/storage load. Edit: fix some typos |

| Yep, that's why I asked what OS the user was running. XP really doesn't make a good server OS, unless you are sharing your files and printers to just one or two computers.

| Well, XP has a 10 concurrent user license for its Samba and ISS systems, so if you have had more than or up to 10 connection at anyone time and the computer thinks they are still connected it may decline the connection. It might also decline it if its under alot of load. Are there any other symptoms or noticeable affects?

| I am lost after all those comments. We have 4 total computers. We store information on 1 base computer. This computer is running Windows XP 2002 Edition. This computer also shares a printer. 2 other computers also share printers. It seems to me that the base computer has 5 connections, but I could be wrong. At the moment the only way I can fix it is to unplug our cable modem and switch, wait a couple of minutes and turn it back on. Afterwards it works perfectly. |

| The problem here is likley to be down to your XP computer, although you still haven't specified if it's running XP Home or Pro and what service pack is installed. Also if you want support here, consider helping other people or posting in the off-topic forums rather than just only asking questions. Alternatively, you may purchase a premium membership to contribute towards the site running costs.

| I'm not saying that I don't want to help, but other sites will have the exact same policy. If you want computer help without giving back, there are many companies that will be more than happy to take your money. A premium membership is not required, it just helps pay for the site. The ads don't make much at all, and I'll need to pay out $30 from my own pocket for updates next month. If you don't want to assist others, that's fine. There are plenty of other ways that you can give back to the community, for example, you can tell a friend about us, or just post once in a while in our off topic areas, located at http://www.compuforums.org/general/. Of course, you're more than welcome to try and find another community that will be essentially a free tech support line. But remember that communities like CompuForums only work if everybody gives as well as takes. It is only with the help of members that the site can continue to provide great support for free.
