Default Failed Internet Connection

This is a failed connection. OS is XP Pro Media Center with IE 6.0 and Oera 9.21. The wireless connection connects, but not the LAN. Double checked the LAN on ther PC's, connects okay.

Repaired IP successful. Windows Firewall on with exceptions (File and Print sharing, Remote Assistance, UPnP Framework).

Firewall, Advanced checked are 1394 Connection, Local Area Connection and Wireless Network...). Setting are at Windows Default.

Ran IE Connection Diagnostics. Results are:

This looks like it might be a DNS issue, not sure whether you've looked at that as a possibility. Try pinging bbc.co.uk, and then pinging 212.58.224.131.

Default Ping

Pinged both, and received reply. Still no connection via Web Browser. Uninstalled the hardware and reinstalled, ran Microsoft's TCP/IP Repair Connection Wizzard, still noting.

Tomorrow is a new day, and I'll try once again.

Notes -- thanks Ash (posted above), I didn't pay attention to this:

= Check HOST file for SIRC32.EXE et al. and scan for double-extension files ( " *.doc.pif " -- e.g.) in Outlook mail, address book, and Temp files. Looking for "SirCam", possibility!

Notes
HOST = c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
HOST = c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
loopback = 127.0.0.1 localhost

Hmm... just noticed something in there that might be to do with the machine's HOSTS file. You might want to take a look and see if there's anything unusual in there....

I had this same problem today. I fixed it by rebooting....

I have a few questions for Tom.
1) I noticed your computer only states 1 ip address. Is this for the Wireless or wired address?
Get to a Command Prompt (hold the windows key and tap the R key, then type cmd and then hit enter) and type ipconfig /all You will receive the information for IP addresses for each NIC.

2) How many devices can your router/gateway handle?
3) How many devices are currently on your router/gateway?

2&3 are asked because some routers will allow only 16 connections (at least one of my old routers will), and it would deny the 16th connection (it uses 1 connection (ip address) for itself). You may have more devices needing IP addresses than your router can handle.

Assuming you are out of available IP's, you will want to see if there is something on your network that can be removed, upgrading your router firmware, or UPGRADING your router completely. Your Router software should give you an idea of the scope of your IP addresses. It should be in your manual too.

I know with my old wired router, it officially supported only 16 connections, but I could increase the scope to the full 256 in the router software. This may be something to check into.

If you have available connections, and still are not getting an IP address, please check the wired-NIC. You may start by making sure you have the current drivers installed, and that the device is enabled.

Assuming that the drivers are current, the NIC is enabled (in device manager or Network Connections), and it is still not getting an IP address, I can hazard a guess that you will need a new wired-NIC. And that is usually built into the Mother/System board on laptops (which I'm assuming you are using by having both NIC's).

You can try (if you have available) dropping the laptop on a Docking Station (not a port replicator) that has a wired NIC. Then running the IPCONFIG /ALL command again to see if you now have a Wired IP Address. If you do, I'd believe you need to have the Wired NIC replaced.

Again to summarize:
1) At a command prompt, run IPCONFIG /ALL to see if there is an IP address for the wired NIC
2) Make sure your router has enough IP addresses. If it does
3) Make sure your drivers are current for the NIC and it is enabled
4) If still no IP address for the Wired NIC, call your Warranty service to see about replacing the wired NIC (system board on many laptops).

Those are my thoughts. Hope it helps.
