Default Hi, new member! Local/shared folders appear as "The Internet" when I open "Network...

G'day all,

I'm new to all this and I am hoping someone can help me with our small computer network. We have 4 machines...3 running XP Home...1 running XP Pro. Our front counter machine displays the shared folders/drives as "The Internet" rather than "Local Network" when opening "My Network Places". Every other machine displays them under "My Network Places". All machines have different names but the same workgroup name. We require the front machine to be able to access our Quickbooks business program! Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Cheers Aaron

Hi Aaron74,
Firstly, welcome to CompuForums. I hope that you can visit our forum often in the future and post - rather than just receiving our help and advice, and then never visiting again. We provide our help for free, and all we ask in return is that you participate in our forum and refer your friends, or consider a premium membership.

What sort of network setup do you have - how are all of the machines connected?
You mention your shop front machine needs to access the Quickbooks app - does this require a server running on another machine that you connect to, or are you trying to have the program load from another computer?

Hi Ashley, and thankyou for the welcome! The four work machines are connected via ethernet?(blue cat5 cable). There is no server as such....we simply use to access Quickbooks from the front computer....the company file was stored on it and all other machines "looked"to the company when they opened! The Quickbooks program is installed on all machines but the front one has the company file on it. I can ping from the front machine with the file on it to the machine in the bosses office but can't ping from the bosses machine back to the front counter! I really don''t understand at all! Some so-called "computing people"have been through and said it may be a simple thing like a permissions issue but I am not sure at all! Hope this may enlighten you a little more. Once again, thankyou for your time and assistance!

Yes into the ADSL modem router(Netcomm NB 5)...not a dedicated router as such no! There is an 8 port switch behind them on the wall...just a generic one!

Default Network Issues

May be a couple issues here.

First
remove the shared PC from being shared. Re-connect using New Network Configuartion Wizzard. Use New Network connection, rather than New Internet Connection.

Second
the folders that are shared on the front computer, check the Sharing properties. Be sure it is for Local Users only.

Third
try re-mapping the network drive.

Fourth
be sure your router hardware is properly setup. Check the front computer Cat-V cable is not plugged into the WAN port (the WAN port on your router will be for your Internet connection, and not local connection.).

Default Checking shared for Local Users only?

G'day Tom,
Thankyou for all your suggestions and help thus far. Can you tell me how I find out if the files/drives are shared for Local Use only? I am running XP Home on all four work machines bar one( it has XP Pro). Also, our router switch setup comprises a Netcomm NB5 ADSL2 modem/router and a Netcomm V300 VOIP Telephone Adapter and an 8 port generic switch! Does it matter which connnection into the 8 port switch the WAN connection from the V300 VOIP goes into? Don't ask who set this ridiculous mess up...he was my computer trainer but is no longer working for us!! I hope this makes some sense and I am not just wasting your time!

Kind regards,
Aaron
