| I am incharge of our home network. I set it up and I am supposed to keep the network working and manage the embarq account aswell as the earthlink account. And I am tired of my brother's yelling at me becuase it's not working, even when it's embarqs fault. So right now I want to get the WRT54G Linksys router working better. Need to know what static IP's are and wheather I can set them up on the computers. Thanks for any help. |

| A Static IP address is a FIXED series of numbers, assigned by your Internet Service Provider, that your your computer uses to identify itself when connecting to the Internet. Static IP addresses are permanent. It looks something like this: 870.219.59.11 <-- (this is a fake IP address) A Dynamic IP address, on the other hand, is an IP address that frequently CHANGES. Dynamic address changes (usually) each time your connect to the Internet. Dynamic IP's are not fixed, and you cannot use a Static address unless your Internet Service Provider assigns one to you. An IP address is sort of like a telephone number, only that some numbers change (dynamic) and some do not change (static). Why do some change and others don't? Why don't they all just stay Static? Because now, there only so many numbers available, and not enough to every one their own. Thus, the invention of a Dynamic IP address -- Static IP's cost more because there are only so many allowed, but a Dynamic IP address is shared with someone else after you have disconnected from the Internet. There could be more than 500 people use the same shared Dynamic IP address in a single day. Did you find this helpful, or do you need more info.? |
