| We have two computers we are trying to get on the same wireless network. We have a desktop and laptop running Windows XP Home Edition. The router is a NetGear WGR614 v5. A couple of months ago both computers could connect fine. One day we were working and the connection was working intermittently Then poof, we lost the connection to the laptop. What is really strange is that the laptop can connect to any other unsecured wireless network. When click to view available networks, our network comes up but we cannot connect. All that happens is that it searches for a couple of minutes and connects to a different unsecured network. We believe our roommate has changed some setting on the desktop but I cannot figure out what has happened. I had a suggestion about changing some sort of PIN #? Any help would be appreciated. |

| Hmm... do you know what wireless card / chipset does your laptop use? If not - what model is it? On some wireless chipsets, there is a "power saving" feature that can make it difficult to connect to your own network but sometimes find others. I had a problem with this myself, until I changed the setting.

| I am not sure the exact issue you are expriencing... but if you need to change the password... Connect your laptop directly into your router via Ethernet cable, then login in to your router's menu (ex. 192.168.1.2) If you need to know the your router's ip address do the following: -Start then click on run -type "cmd" and click enter and the command promt will open up -Then on the command prompt type "ipconfig" and wait -look for the "Default Gateway" and note down the number -on your url bar, type it in. Then your routers option/page should open up, click on - A) something like "Security" or "Change password" and change it - B) reset to default settings Hope that helps, Remember to post back here |

| OK, well I don't have a spare ethernet cable to login to my routers menu so I tried something else. I got on the desktop and tried to login to the router wirelessly. A box popped up asking for my username and password. Does this mean that the router is password protected? If so I believe my roommate has changed the settings without realizing it. How can I change it? The wireless card on the laptop is Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2915ABG network connection. |

| Hmm... the password request changes what I thought was wrong with it. All you need to do is ask your room mate for the password and it will log in fine. It's better with the password on - otherwise anyone in range can use your internet connection - even for illegal activity, and the police will be onto you for it.

| Yes - take a look at the router - there should be a reset button either on the back or the bottom of it. Unplug the router's power cable. Hold the reset button on the back of the wireless router before connecting the power again and connect the power with it still held down then continuing to hold the reset button for 30 seconds. Release it, unplug and replug the power again and give the router a while. Then the default SSID and unencrypted status should show up on your computer. If you tell me the make of the router I can tell you what this will be.

| You should be able to find an unencrypted network called 'Netgear' or 'Wireless' with your laptop - when you do, connect to it and tell us if you can access the internet through it.

| Well I fixed my problem, so I decided to take my new found knowledge to my brothers house. However, I ran into more problems. He has one labtop running Windows XP. The router is a Linksys WRT54G, and is using the Linksys WUSB54GC adapter. He's using Clear wire to connect to the internet it it works great without the Linksys router. The first time I set up the wireless router I could connect to the internet using an Ethernet cable with no problem, but I couldn't connect wirelessly. So, I typed in the default gateway into the url and started attempting to change the security settings of the router. However, I somehow did not change the settings correctly becuase I got the ole "limited to no connectivity" for the LAN line and wireless connection. Next I decided to reset the router to solve the problem as I did before. I know the router reset because I can see that the SSID changed from what I originally selected. However, I still get the "limited to no connectivity" message on both the LAN connection and wireless connection. Now I can't even type in the default gateway to change anything. Finally, I thought the problem was with my modem, so I plugged the labtop directly to the modem and I can connect fine. I believe the problem is with the router, but I'm at a loss at how to continue. Thanks. |

| Try reseting the modem and router. For the modem, unplug it for about 1 or 2 minutes or hold down the reset button for 30 seconds. For the router, hold down the reset button for 15 seconds. I have a wrt54g router and it is pretty easy to setup. Also try using the cd that came with the router. This will give you step by step instructions on setting up your router. |

| Called linksys and everything is working now. They had my go to the "ipconfig" screen and for some reason the IP Address line was an Autoconfig IP address. So we reset the router a little differently than suggested on this forum. He had me reset the router without unplugging the power. Eventually the line "Autoconfig IP address" changed to "IP address" and everything worked fine. However, I don't know the difference. |
