How do you get internet access?

You can share internet access between the laptop and the desktop if they both have an Ethernet port, but a cable will have to be connected between the two. Wireless internet access might be more convenient for you, but you'll need a modem with an Ethernet port to use a wireless router.

Hi Ash

thank you for a replay. i use my phone line port in my computer to get connected to the internet. about Ethernet port i dont know if my computer have one. if you are refering to the one that is similar to the phone line port in my computer but bigger size yes i do have it.but it looks to me a network port tho.

can i have a clue to find out if my computer has this particular port. by the way my laptop is hp Pavilion ze4200 xp and my desk top is dell xp

An Ethernet port and network port are synonymous - as long as you have one on both computers, it will be easy to connect them and share internet access.

As long as both computers are running XP, all you need to do is connect the two and run the Network Setup Wizard on one of them [in Control Panel, under Classic View]. Just make sure both computers are under the same workgroup [Windows Logo Key+Pause/Break, Computer Name, Change button].

yeah, the only reason i asked was cause i thought it would just be easier to run remote desktop connection, if they were both xp professional that is, but it looks like Ash told u what you need to know

No problem, we're here to help
I hope you can help us by posting here often and referring friends.

Remote Desktop is a great feature of XP, but if you're running home you can try an alternative such as UltraVNC [Google for it] or even LogMeIn.com to use your computer over an internet connection.
