Now, I don't use any wires at all - I'm very pleased with wireless networking. If you don't want wires at and/or you have a laptop you want to use anywhere in the house, wireless is the best [and often cheapest] option.

However, if you're comparing Ethernet and mains networking:
*Ethernet
Pros:
Easy to set up
Fast data rate
Not affected by interferance
Cons:
Networking equipment can be expensive
You'll need to install additional wiring
Cables can get expensive too

*Mains
Pros:
No wiring involved
Access wherever there is a plug
Easy to set up
Cons:
Equipment is usually expensive
Affected by interference on your mains circuit - e.g hairdryer or thermostat
May add cost to your electricity bill

Personally if it was me, I'd choose wireless - but if that was not an option, Ethernet.
The only reason that I think someone would choose mains is when they want to cover a large area but can't lay cables, for example if they lived in a listed building.

I hope that helps, and if you have any more questions do not hesitate to ask them.
