Default Wireless router troubles....

Hey guys

im havin some troubles with my D-Link wireless router DI-624 revision C with newest firmware. Ever since i had this router, my signal randomly dissconnects. Whenever playin online, my connection lags and after playing for 5 minutes, i get "connection error" and im disconnected from the server even though i hav a 7Mb connection. Even when im downloading a file from a website, it will just stop in the middle and my download will be dead. I tryed googling this problem, and it seems that a lot of people with this model is experienceing this problem. Just wondering if there is any type of software that can solve this problem or if there is some way to fix it.

Thankx, any help is appreciated.

Hi again iyf,

If you can, try to get the manufacture to replace it - particularly as you've found other users also have the same problem. My router also has a lot of bad reviews for stability, and I had issues with it too. Belkin sent out a replacement for free and I didn't even need to send back the old one [which I've now sold on eBay for half the price it originally cost].

The only other advice I can give you is the standard:
-Position of the router: Make sure that your computer is level with or below the antenna - but not above it. If it's in a room on another floor of your home, put it near the door if possible.

-Download and install NetStumbler:
Downloads | NetStumbler.com
Do you see any other hotspots near you? Have a look at their channels. If most are channel 1, change your router's channel to 11. If most are channel 11, change it to 1. If most are channel 6, change your router's channel to 1 or 11. You get the idea.

-Airflow - if you find the router gets very hot, place something underneath each of it's feet so there is plenty of air space underneath. If there are more ventilation slots on the bottom than the top, run it upside down. Wall mounting it will also help. If the warranty has expired, take it apart and run it with the top off or with just the circuit board.

Let us know how you get on with these suggestions.

unfortunately, d-link wont take it back as this is a "small issue". As for the channels, i have to have the router running on channel 11, becuase that is the onli channel my wii will connect to. But luckely, no one else is running on that channel. the router is actually in the basement so its in a relatively cool place. Im so dissapointed with d-link though.....they sell a faulty product and offer no ressolve. Its so weird though, my router doesnt physically disconnect, it just stops iin the middle of a download or just stops the connection in a game, even though you could have a program like utorrent downloading at the same time without any disconnection.

Well thankx for your suggestions, if u hav anymore, it would be great.

thankx again

Well... you'd be better off complaining of overheating. It took me four calls to Belkin to replace it - some agents are more willing than others.

Also - the fact that your router is in the basement may be the problem. Wireless signals travel best down, not up. If moving it to somewhere else is not a problem, consider getting a wireless repeater.

Well if the warranty is expired you may be out of luck, unless you purchased it with a credit card etc. that has a goods replacement policy.

However, as the warranty is up, you might want to consider running the router without the case. Generally, this should will improve cooling.

However, I think the main problem is the router being in the basement. It's not an ideal place to have it - you might want to try upgrading the antenna, or better still get a wireless repeater.

nope, my isp is rogers. if you are getting a good connection only at night, then it is most likely not your router, but either an ISP issue, or the website or service you are using is busy during the day.

if it is cable it is probably a RF distribution network before it gets to your home. In my experience troubleshooting dropoff probs this can be caused by noise in the cable distribution network. It can leave the equip. online (modem and router, or combo) but drop "packets" during the routing from point a to b. Easiest test would be to ping a website i.e.Yahoo or Google. But the standard ping may not be enough you may need more to actually find dropped packets.

If you dont know how do this comand ping Yahoo! -t
and then after about 100 or so hit Ctrl + C to terminate

If you dont loose any than this may not be your problem but would help rule out ISP.
If you do loose some let me know and ill give more tips as this can run on and on.

u hav a pretty bad problem from the looks of it......i've had connectivity issues with a diffrent wirless internet provider and when certian things didn't go through all i did was open the correct port for easyier traffic flow. finding out which ports to open is ur problem but when i started popping ports open some of my downloads doubled in speed. if this doesn't work don't critisize me for giving crappy advice.

Have you asked your provider which protocols they use for their service? I had a cable provider who did not want to give any configuration info away because (they told me) they did not want anyone setting up a router/gateway for their own personal LAN. They wanted everyone to pay for each computer. In that case, I could connect, but after a few minutes I'd lose connection. This was a few years ago, but you may want to verify what they use and see if your router needs some settings changed. Could this be right? Who knows, but it's one thing that can be checked.

there are some companies out there that do want to charge for extra devices on thier network ( routers or other computers) but in my company's case iyf wouldn't be able to get online at all if there is not a mac address on the cmts for that for his account.
