| Hi, hi, I'm new here! Anyways, I have a question . Over the weekend, I just bought a new computer, a router and everything else I needed to get it up and running. Well, I still have an old computer that works perfectly, so we hooked the router up to both so they could both be online at the same time. I want to share computers, I guess is what you call it? - I want to be able to download something from my old computer, and just copy it to the new computer, without having to put it on CD or anything. Um .. Understand what I am saying? I only want the two in my house to be able to access each other, and not anyone else being able to get in. How can I do this? =) Jamie |

| Hi. By far the easiest way is to bypass any sort of home network and just connect the two computers directly to each other with an Ethernet Crossover cable (generally they're quite cheap). But the computers need to be in close proximity to each other (because of the length of the cable), and this isn't a good long-term solution, just a quick one to use once or twice to get stuff off of your old computer and put onto your new computer. Google it if you want to know more about how the crossover cable works. It typically works very well unless the two computers are set up with the windows network wizard to use different domains--if they're both using the same domain (MSHOME is the default in windows), just disable the windows firewall on your ethernet NIC and you should be able to see the other computer in the network profiles. If you want a how-to, there are plenty online--just google it. No reason to re-do what others have done thousands of times before... This looks like a good place to start learning: Connect Two Computers - Networking 2 Home Computers If you get stuck let us know. Good luck!
