Default laptop no longer connects wirelessly - PLEASE HELP

Linksys router works fine. Two desktops and one laptop. Until 2 days ago laptop connected fine anywhere in the house. I thought it was the router but realized it's the network adapter in the laptop. Device manager tells me my Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG is operating and works properly but troubleshooting option can't discern problem and tells me it can't connect to the adapter.
NETWORK Connections window has red "X's on both Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated C, AND for the INTEL Wireless PRO 2200BG.
Intel Wireless connection window (how I typically connect) will not connect automatically anymore, will not show my network as an available network and continually tells me it's unable to connect.

And then the real screwy part is that every once in awhile - it works - like now. But only for a brief period of time. To be honest though I'm not really sure if the network I'm connected to is mine. Laptop is less than 2 ft from signal but signal strength is low as indicated in my system tray icon. Signal strength in Available networks indicates it's very strong at 5 bars but unlocked. I made a few connections before getting it right a month ago and thought I deleted the ones that weren't locked. I'm confused.

Anyhow, anyone have any idea what I'm dealing with. My gut tells me this is probably simple but I just don't know much about basic networking. Sorry about the novel, I'm just trying to provide good info.
Thanks so much. Chris O'Brien

Firstly, you really need to make sure you are connected to your own network, not your nieghbours, or anyone elses.
Then try working out which piece of hardware is failing, if any. I would suggest it was the wireless reciever in the Laptop.

i had the problem i found that in the tray is says low signal but when it connected it was very strong the problem i had was in the preffered network it had locked onto my neighbours but connected to mine so its worth a double check and also move the laptop further away by a room as i found that being to close can cause the laptop not to pick up my network an just my neighbours
