Default WiFi Security

Hello,

I was just wondering what security you guys use on your WiFi access points...

I have WPA-PSK, Mac Address Filtering and I also hide the SSID. However this isn't rock solid, SSIDs can be sniffed out easily, but I think trying to clone 1 of 2 mac addresses i have unfiltered and a 7 digit WPA key is pretty hard. And I doubt it if someone could get in, and by the time they do, the WPA would have been changed by me.

hmmm. that is a bit odd, how far away are the devices from the access point? and what channel is it on? are there many other access points on the same channel near you?

Default router security

Hey guys! I have a Belkin router and sometimes the signal can be quite weak! My other pc is just around the corner but I heard that it should not be anywhere near any electrical equipments such as telephones etc as this could cause signal interference..... just wondering what is the best way to have a secure router as sometimes my pc won't pick up the signal. I do have trend micro anti virus but enabling this would also affect downloading yes?

Security of a router doesn't tend to affect the signal. The security is what stops illigitimate or unauthorised users getting in. I personally think the best way to secure a router is WPA-PSK encryption which allows you to set a password on your connection. But remember to change this every couple of weeks or else someone might be sad enough to leave a pc on for a month and crack the password. Changing the password prevents this.

I myself have a Belkin router which lives on my PC desk, which sits in a corner. I have found that if my router is too far inside the corner the signal drops. Consider wall-mounting your router, there should be little screw holes inside. Securing your router does not affect download speed - and even if it did, most wireless networks operate at 54mbps and unless you're very lucky most people don't have much more than 8mbps internet access. So you would not notice a thing. And to have a secure router is a must unless you want people snooping around your computer. Enable the router's firewall and enable WPA2, with a long passkey. And remove the power to the router when your network is not in use to prevent people accessing it while you are not using the computer [many people leave their PCs and routers online at night, and this gives attackers ample time to connect to your wireless network and do whatever they want].
