Default PowerBook G4 Clamshell Question

I'm running a PowerBook G4 (well it's my dad's, but I use it the majority of the time when I'm home from school). I was wondering about clamshell since I'm thinking of getting a mac laptop come spring. It's real simple, from what I've researched, it seems you keep the thing from going to sleep if you plug in the power, controller device (mouse or keyboard), and a monitor - then close the lid. Good. I need to have the ability to close the lid and keep my INTERNET on. I need to be able to receive messages through chat clients as well as keep various stuff (for servers) open constantly. I can't have this all shutting off just because I close the lid, but I can't guarantee it'll be connected to a monitor either.

I can guarantee that it'll always be connected to a mouse and/or keyboard, but I can't always guarantee the monitor part on it - is there any way I can retain it from sleeping without a monitor plugged in when I close the lid?

OR

Is there any way to close the lid and let it sleep - but keep internet connections open? I'm obviously looking to do this without using a program that hacks the system, though 3rd party (non mac created) programs are still an option.

Thanks in advance, if anybody can help...
