Default MSN for mac.

Hey All,

Hopefully Rob or someone with mac knowledge may be able to help.

Well i'm getting a mac and was wandering is Microsoft's Messenger better or shall i use a 3rd party MSN? Because knowing microsoft they would have let several security holes open!

Well as you know I'm not a mac person but apparently the official client for Mac has been left un-updated for years and it's terrible.

Remember though OSX is based on BSD/Unix, so it's secure by default.

Hello, Yeah, MSN for Mac is pretty bad, doesn't allow webcams or winks or voice clips etc... But it works as a basic chat client, and now includes custom emoticons and display pictures. Which can be a godsend as those stupid MSN Plus sounds and stuff are just annoying and MSN for Mac doesn't do any of it. So it depends if you are a user who likes MSN to be normal MSN or MSN to be somesort of crazy drugged out world where strange noises pop through your speakers and crazy lights come up flashing in a winky.

It has recently been updated to suit the new Windows Live iniative with new logos and some new features such as allowing you to send custom emoticons as well as recieve.

well,

i guess potentially it is more secure because it is made by microsoft, from a privacy point of view. however flaws exist in the protocol anyway. so i guess it is personal preference, are you more comfortable with GAIM, or MSN? potentially third parties could submit your chats to another organisation etc... even though it breaks data protection. But secure, should be as secure as on Windows. but we cant really tell. unless you use a packet sniffer, maybe you could detect its features with that.

I don't know if you found anything but the beta 3.0 of yahoo instant messenger for the Mac supposedly supports msn/msn live as well as webcam support. If you don't mind using yahoo, it might be a worthwhile workaround.

hmmm that is an interesting idea, does it allow you to use your msn ID, or would everyone have to add a new yahoo ID?

You have to use your yahoo ID, however you can add your MSN/MSN Live friends to your buddie list and you theoretically should be able to talk to them. Apparently Yahoo's IM servers can talk to MSN's servers.
