| Hi Does anyone have any advice on how to get Outlook to play a sound when mail arrives from a particular person? I've gone into Tools, Rules and Alerts and I've set a rule for it to play a particular sound when I get an email from my boss. But it only plays the standard sound that I get when any email arrives and not the special one I chose. I put the new .wav file in the Windows\Media folder with all the others. I've tried going into the sound control panel and turning off the sound there, so it's just Outlook that's controlling it, but still it doesn't work. Probably there's something fairly simple that I haven't done, but I can't see it! Thanks. Pat |

| Hello there Pat, Firstly welcome back to CompuForums. Please remember that if you only ever return here when you've got a computer question we won't be able to assist you. So to help keep the site running, please consider posting in a few threads apart from your own, referring us to a friend or even becoming a premium member which helps to cover the site's spiraling costs as well as entitling you to express support. Is this a home or work computer? Some kind of security policy/system may be set up on it that prevents you from changing any files within C:\Windows. Try saving the wav elsewhere and setting it up in Outlook.

| Thanks, Ash. I have logged in occasionally to see if there was anything I could help with, but either someone else had provided the answer already or I didn't know it anyway (I'm OK at stuff, but am not a techie)! I'm at work, but I have administrator rights on my computer so I should be able to work within the Windows folder. And I probably should also have said that I have another rule set up that should use a .wav file in My Documents - and that doesn't work either. Thanks anyway, though. Best wishes. Pat |

| Hmm... it is odd that it's not working. I don't use Outlook myself so the knowledge of the program is fairly limited. Also did you try following MS' "official" instructions? There's a page at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ou...378051033.aspx. One other thing you might want to try is simply selecting one of the "default" Windows sounds in the MEDIA folder and seeing if it works. Also you don't need to be technical to post here. We've got an off topic section: General - Computer Forums

| I did exactly what it says on the official site, so it should work. And I tried your idea of using one of the standard sounds - but that doesn't work either! I think I'll ask our Exchange server people, in case they've got something set up centrally on to stop us doing it. Many thanks for trying to help. Pat |

| Hi. We're using 2003 at work. My tech support gave me the answer, which was to turn off the standard alert sound. Then when you set up a rule to play a sound when an email arrives from someone specific, it will play it. The reason for the original query was that my boss was away on holiday for 4 weeks. We all recorded little messages and we wanted to set up her machine so that when she got back to work, every time she got an email from any of us, it would play our message. Worked a treat! (I've currently got a couple of Simpson sounds - Homer saying "Hello" and "Ah crap" - not sure how long I'll leave them on, though. Luckily I don't get too many messages from the two people I've set up the rules for!) Pat |
