It sounds like you may have spyware/adware on your computer that is preventing you from changing these settings. Do you run any antispyware/adware software on your computer at all? If so, is your copy updated and have you run a scan recently?

| Hi. This same thing recently happened to me. What typically happens is that a registry setting is mistakenly changed--not by you, but by some program typically. Here's the site that I got my solution from: "Windows cannot display Windows Firewall settings" error while accessing Firewall settings in Windows XP Service Pack 2 "Case 1" worked for me--that should work. Let us know how it goes. Just follow the instructions step by step, and don't forget to restart your computer when you're supposed to.

| Well - have you tried an antivirus / antispyware scan? Also you might want to consider installing SP2 - it has a lot of security benefits over SP1, and also you should have a firewall on your computer other than the built-in Windows one.

| Did you try my suggestion? SP1 should still come with windows firewall settings, and you should still be able to access it. Give my suggestion a try.

| If it were me, I would download Ad-Aware SE and Spyware Guard. Then I would update to SP2, install Comodo Firewall, and turn off Windows Firewall. All these programs are free and since I have been using them, I have not had any issues whatsoever.

| The problem is that a registry setting was changed, and they are not able to access the Windows firewall settings to disable/enable it. But as soon as they do--I agree, disregard the built-in Windows firewall and just get a 3rd party one--I like Zonealarm.

| Very true, but I didn't know how to fix it, only how to avoid it!

| Yes, avoiding windows firewall is not a bad idea--except if it's enabled and for some reason you need to turn it off, then it's a problem--which is what I ran into, and how I found the fix I mentioned above. It works--might as well fix it before something bad happens and then you're screwed...
