| Need some help on a new Lenovo. US robotics wireless will not connect. Will not aquire network address. This is 2nd computer as the first one had software problems (of course Misrosoft would do nothing except charge me). When I first started this one up, it worked (connected and surfed) for abour two hours then just quit surfing. It never connected wireless side. I have two other laptops in the house that are fine, no problems. With the 1st one (Lenovo), I was on with Tech Support (Lenovo, MS, ISP and US robotics) for over 6 hours in two days. I just wanted to update and am having problems with my Sotec 820P. The motherboard is going out on it again. Now this one doesn't seem to want to work either. Are there some gurus out there that are smarter than the Tech Supports? Any help would be appreciated. |

| Well, my measley advice is to try to reinstall the driver--but I'm sure (a) you thought of that and (b) tech support recommended that. Also, one very frustrating thing I learned from my sister's Toshiba laptop is that it has a physical switch for the wireless card--is this true on yours? Could the switch be off? That's such a silly thing to mention, but I thought I'd mention everything I know. Hope it works out, I'm out of ideas.

| Does your wireless router have any security settings enabled, such as MAC filtering?

| If there is no MAC filtering enabled and there are other computers hooked up without problems then I would assume that it's a hardware fault with the laptop. My best advice is to take it back to the store where you got it from. This is unlikely, and you've probably tried this already, but have you tried to connect to the wireless router with only the laptop connected to it, no other hardware connected either wirelessly or otherwise? Sometimes wireless routers can't handle too many computers connected at the same time, but this is usually an issue only on the really cheap routers. Worth a try though.

| Already done that too! I am going to take it to Panera Bread and see if it will connect there. That will tell me whether it is a problem at home or the computer. I did that with the other one and it wouldn't connect anywhere. I have downloaded updated drivers and still can't get it to work. |

| Well if you cannot connect elsewhere either then it's likely to be a hardware fault. I doubt that during quality testing at the factory they tested the wireless capability - that's why they have warranties. Lots of problems go un-noticed when goods are mass-produced. But taking it back to the store for an exchange would be the quickest way of getting the wireless working, if it's a hardware fault.

| Here's something I only just thought of: Does Panera [I don't live in the USA so I assume this is some sort of restaraunt / Starbucks-type place offering Wifi access] use the 802.11b [Wireless-B] standard and does your home network use 802.11g [Wireless-G] or vice versa? It may be that your laptop is set to only connect to either one of these.
