| Has your friend added any new hardware recently? Has he/ she tried disconnecting any DVD / CD ROMS, and then tried re-booting? It may be down to lack of power.. Jam

| I always encourage people to report the solutions to their technical problems. Doing so allows others to receive answers and keeps this forum alive. So, I'm happy to say that I've solved the mystery to this one. After my friends paid 49.95 to Dell for support and not received any help I figured out it was due to a faulty modem card in one of the PCI slots. The machine is a Dell XPS 410. The tech guy said it was going to cost $400 to replace the motherboard. Thankfully it was not the case. Hooray!
