I have been having a problem with random freeze ups and restarts. When I say random I mean from the initial screen to idleing on the desktop. I have tried a number of things from rebooting to dusting. I did find a connector from motherboard to face that is possibly bad, my next step was to replace this connector. Next I was going to replace the power switch. The funny thing, yesterday we lost power to the house, the computer was off at the time. When power was restored the computer came up without being turned on. I haven't had the aforemetioned problem since (about 12 hours operating time now). I fear that the problem will recur so I am persueing the solution while I can.
Specs ell Precision 360, 120 gig harddrive, 1.5 gig ram, 256 nvidia graphics card, sound blaster live sound card, windows xp pro sp3,800fsb. |

I'm guessing your using XP / Vista?
It'll most probably be a problem due to the software that you have running. Have you got an anti-virus running on your computer? Once you boot up, and you are logged in okay, look at the task manager, are there any processes that are using a lot of CPU or RAM up? JAM

As a matter of fact I have tried several OS as well as changing the hard drive with windows 2000 already on it all with the same results. This was the original hard drive and I had no problems with it prior to switching to the 120 gig. Also I said it was working o.k. since the power outage. well the ugly monster suddenly reared it's head again after about 14 hours operating time. thnx for the response, rob
________________________ This user added the following: ________________________ I got the computer used and have had it for about a year. I am not sure exactly how old or how many hours operating time it has on it. As far as software I am not using anything I haven't used before. I use AVG anti-virus and recently ran a scan with Norton. No viruses showed up. Maxthon uses the most ram at 57000 combined with explorer at 20000 for a total of 77000, but like I said it will freeze or restart while coming up. The only thing using much CPU is idle process at 99 while idleing. Thnx to all that are helping, Rob Last edited by robkjrsdad; 07-01-2008 at 03:24 PM. Reason: Double Post |

Do you have one or two antivirus programs loaded right now? You probably don't want to be running Norton "Antivirus" on any computer...

Did you make sure that your power cable was secure into the wall and the PC? Is your surge protector (or UPS) still protecting? Is it securely plugged in?
The computer restarting after the power loss is not strange, that is a common BIOS setting, to either Power On after a failure, or to go to Previous State (on if on, off if off). By reseting other connections, you could have taken care of part of the problem. Can you monitor your computer's CPU temperature? I have seen CPU's go bad, as well as cooling towers (yes those) a few times. There are many things to consider. Could it be a virus, yes. But it's easier to rule out hardware first (IMHO). and Freeze ups are likely to be software. But there are so many ways software can go bad, it's quicker to rule out hardware.
