Default Newbie prob.

Hi,

Firstly I need to explain that I am fairly new to computing so anyone replying to this will need to go very slow, thanks.

I went to install a new game onto my pc and came across the problem in the attached file, my question really is how do I change / upgrade the cpu frequency.

Thanks.

Hello Dazzer,
Firstly - welcome to CompuForums. We provide our computer help for free, so we would highly appreciate it if you could help us. You can do this by answering other people's questions, or if you are not so technically-minded, post in our general lounge forum. Alternatively you can purchase a premium membership to help contribute to the rising running costs of this site. If you can't help us then we can't help you. This system allows us to continue to provide free computer support.

You will have to upgrade your computer's CPU before you can play this game.

You need to take the side off of your computer, remove the heatsink fan and heatsink, remove the old processor from the socket and put in a new one, and reassemble everything.

The long and the short of it, Dazzer, is that the game you want to run needs a better PC than you've got at the moment. Boosting the speed of your machine can sometimes be quick and easy, but if you're asking the question here, the likelihood is that it's not something you'd be ready for this weekend.

The very first thing you need to find out is whether or not your CPU can run at a higher speed than it's currently set for. It's probably already running at max, but if not, the next question is whether the other components (principally motherboard) can cope with it running at a higher speed. These changes are usually effected by changing jumper settings on the motherboard, so you're going to need to get the necessary info from somewhere. You might be lucky - it might be printed in legible text on the motherboard itself .... or maybe not.

If your motherboard can cope with a higher speed CPU, but the CPU is going as fast as possible, then you'll need to upgrade the CPU. Off-the-shelf components are easy enough to fit - just make sure you get a compatible processor.

At this stage, you might want to ask yourself how much you want to play that game!
