Default Restored to many times now 15% free

Looking at the pie chart of free space for my C drive I have gone from 16. G free down to 2.8 after I kept restoring to earlier points because I thought I was gaining free space or "cleaning it up", now its worse, how do I get back to alot more free space?

Firstly Its My Pleasure to CompuForums. I hope you will become a regular user and look forward to reading more posts from you. If you require help from us, then please be sure to post in threads other than your own. These do not need to be technical posts - we have a section where you can discuss anything unrelated to computing and technology Which is situated in the General Category called The lounge. Alternatively, you may wish to become a premium member for even more great benefits. If you need any help please be sure to send me or another mod/admin a personal message and we will do our best to help you.

Okay, Resoring to earlier points does not free up space. You can free up space by going using the disk cleanup utility which is in System Tools. This should free up some space for you. Every Restore point that is created uses up memory from your hard disk. Give disk cleanup a try and see how much space you can re-claim. There are other options we can try after you have done this. But give this a go then come back to us.

Already did that, I have 2.82 free and over 16.00 used now and before I did this I had the reverse almost. Thinking I might have to reload the XP operating system entirely and only have a disk for my laptop, Toshiba factory disk that is. Guessing I have to get an operating disk on ebay or something drastic??

Hello altruistic,
Firstly - welcome to CompuForums. We provide our computer help for free, so we would highly appreciate it if you could help us. You can do this by answering other people's questions, or if you are not so technically-minded, post in our general lounge forum. Alternatively you can purchase a premium membership to help contribute to the rising running costs of this site. If you can't help us then we can't help you. This system allows us to continue to provide free computer support.

One thing you might want to try is turning System Restore off. It can use a large chunk of disk space, particularly if you have several restore points, and it isn't really a very good method of backing up.
Also, give Crap Cleaner a try. Get it free from:
CCleaner - Downloading...

Did you try disabling hibernate too? That can take a lot of memory on your hard drive too (It does on Vista at least).

How many computers are you talking about here? If it's just the laptop and you have a disk, you can restore your laptop to what it was when you received it. If you don't want to do that you can move pictures, music and and any other personal files to dvd, cd, external hard drives, etc. Uninstall all programs you no longer use. Doing all this your computer will run much faster and will give you all kinds of space without having to start over. Don't forget to defrag. You could also change the amount of space used for system restore. You can also turn off system restore and use this free one. ERUNT and NTREGOPT It is excellent.
