Default Trouble with new gfx card

Hi people.

Needing some help for a friend who cant install his gfx card. He has some integrated thing which is crap so he got hold of a geforce 7600gs (bit old i know) but is having problems getting it working.

When i upgraded my own computer i just -

1. disabled integrated thing
2. turned offf comp, stuck in card and plugged monitor into it
3. started the comp, installed the drivers and hey presto a restart and all was good.

Now the problem my friend is having is at step 3 when he plugs the monitor into the new card he gets a message saying "out of range"

The card seems to install the drivers ok (shows up in device manager) but the monitor just doesnt give a picture when its plugged into the back of the new card

Any suggestions?

Thx in advance

So, it does that all through the startup and beyond? Are you even able to get into Windows while plugged into that card? It could be that your monitor doesn't support the higher resolution the graphics card is putting out. The higher resolution would be "out of range" if the graphics card is putting out 1200 * 800, and the monitor only handles 800 * 600 (I know, its a bit of a weird example). But one last question, when does the out of range start? After the splash screen and POST, or right when Windows goes to boot?

It might not be just the resolution. I could be the Hertz value. Maybe the monitor can not handle a high value. Right click on the desktop and select Properties, Display Settings, Advanced and change the Hertz to a lower value. You could also lower the display resolution at the same time. Click Apply etc and reboot. Hopefully it is now working.

He says the card seems to install the drivers and shows up in Device manager. How can he see Device manager? Does on board graphics come back on automatically because it can't handle the video card?

It shouldnt do because the vga cable is plugged into the external card and not into the motherboards onboard graphics. Unless he is changing to onboard to install drivers and viewing it there I cant see how he can see it.

The thing is the on-board card is nvidia and the driver supports both the new card and the on-board one. So when he uninstalled the on-board card he was simply installin it again

Well thanks for the replys but he got it sorted somehow. When he went to the properties on the desktop he just messed around with it and it started working. To be honest he didnt even know what he done to get it working buts its all good now

P.S. Sry for late reply my net got cut off
