Default RAM? question

i have a motherboard, which supports DDR2-800, but only up to 512mb per stick (it has 4 slots).

i currently have 1 stick of 1GB DDR2-667 ram installed, but recently i randomly acquired another stick of DDR2-800 (1GB, too much for motherboard)...

my question is, is there any way that i can install this DDR2-800 1GB stick, if i go into bios, or something else, to turn to down, or something (basically, is there any way i can use this stick in my computer?)?

thanks

I don't think this would be possible.

I just bought the game Hellgate London, and didn't read the requirments close enough, and it requires at least 1g of ram, but I only have 512 in right, so I rummaged through my spare parts and found 2 sticks. One of them says "32x64 PC133 6-layer" Does anyone know what this means? The other one says "Kingston KTC2428/128". I'm going to guess that that means its 128mb, but the question is, are these two sticks compatible with this motherboard? Also, can I run two or maybe three different types of Ram on one mobo?

If all fails, I can just put it on our family computer.

Its not possible as far as im aware to install a RAM stick bigger than those that your Motherboard Takes.

Go to your MB manufacture and check for a BIOS update. Often times you'll find one. Occasionally, the update will allow for larger RAM usage.

If the manufacture does have an update, follow the flash instructions VERY CAREFULLY.

Yo!

thanks, i shall try that, though surely, if the motherboard says its max is DDR2 667, doesn't that mean that the motherboard physically cannot hold the stick?

If you find the BIOS update, how exactly does this allow for larger RAM usage? I don't understand that.

It would help to start with if you had placed this thread in the correct forum. As far as BIOS updates, I simply went to Dell and updated from A03 to A11. However, whatever your motherboard is designed to handle as far as ram, well, you can install all of the ram you want but, it will still only recognize what it was initially designed for.

whats wrong with the placing of the thread? (internal: ram, motherboards...) sorry if i did get this worng

anyway... yea, i shall try the update. just another quicky, if i was to just put the stick into the motherboard slot, when i booted the computer -i know it may or may not recognise it- but if it didn't could it destroy the Mobo? asin, might it set alight or possibly cause damage to the system?

thanks

I moved it from general hardware. Sorry to be picky but, I have not been paying enough attention to my moderator responsibilties. You are definitely one of the better ones so please do not take it personally. That is always a possibilty. You would need to monitor your situation closely if you attempt to do this. Check the update first and also double check with your manufacturer's spec's. You can always try a chat session with a representative from your computer maker to assist with your questions as well.
