Default Running out of space!

I have a 80g hard drive that is about half full, and I'd like to replace it with another larger one. I already purchased a 250g WD hard drive, but I don't have any more Hard drive slots in my case. Is there a way to do a entire copy of my 80g and paste it to my 250g? If it is possible, would it be safe to just sit the hard drive on the bottom of the case while the transfer works?

Well theoretically you could do that, but it would take a long time, but if you decide to do it leaving the hd on the bottom of the case could cause the drive to overheat. Why dont you have any move HD slots?

Its a cheap case... I bought it used for $10. I have an external drive, but the problem is that I have too many programs using memory. Could I copy to the external, install the 250g, then download from the external? What do you think the ETA would be with ~35g to upload, then download would be?

If you copied to an external drive, keep in mind that you will most likely have to reinstall Windows, so make sure that you have your installation DVD. As for transfering, I think it would take a few hours to transfer the files. Though I personaly reccomend tat you get a new case, here are a few:

Newegg.com - Thermaltake Armor Series VA8003BWS Black Full Tower Case w/ 25CM Fan - Retail
Newegg.com - NZXT LEXA BlackLine Black Steel / Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail

Yes I agree with five of eight here a new case is the best solution.

someone i saw once positioned a spare HDD on top of some old cigarette packs. there were no over heating issues here, but the user did have a good cooling fan in front of the HDD. again, i recommend you purchase a new case (even most of the really cheap ones have a 4 HDD capacity. if the worst comes to the worst, you could mod a HDD container into the bottom of the case, but buying a new case would probably end up cheaper.

another plus of using both HDD is that you will have more memory space (250 + 80)

thanks

It sounds to me that you have the same issue that I have. I have a small form factor, which only has one slot for a internal hdd. There are a few options to do what you are wanting to accomplish. First, spend approx. $100 to have someone like Circuit City or Best Buy do a file transfer from one drive to the other. It only takes a couple of minutes but, is a bit expensive, you would not have to reload Windows. The other, you would need to possess a case that could hold your old hdd while you loaded your new one into your computer and then you simply run a program that basically does everything for you. If you want more particulars on this option, let me know.

the second option i recommend, it is probably cheaper, and it is easier, and you learn something whilst you do it.

Circuit City has the case for the hdd on sale now for $19.99. All you will then need is to install the new one in your computer and the old one in this case. You will need a program that then does all of the work for you. I cannot remember the one I have used but, I will double check with my IT guy @ work in the morning and advise you. This case hooks to your usb port and the hdd fits in it perfectly. Hang in there!
The case id. on Circuit City's site is 'Antec web id: MX100

My laptop has 45g left on the hard drive of an available 70g. I don't plan on downloading any other huge files or programs in the future, but is this enough space to ensure that it will run well? If not, how much should I add to what I have? It is a lenovo laptop that is about seven months old.

Ok great, thanks. One other thing. My desktop computer, which my whole family uses, has 13.8g left of an available 18.6. I know this is not a lot of memory used up, but is the sheer lack of available memory space on the computer bad for it's operation and performance, or is this also a sufficient amount of space?
