Default Ram Question

I am gonna upgrade to vista. I am planning to upgrade my ram to 2gb. Is this a good kit of memory:

Newegg.com - PNY OPTIMA 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail

Also, can my rig handle vista with gaming.

Memory: Item mentioned above
Gfx Card: Geforce 6600 256mb
Processor: P4 2.8GHz
Hard Drives: 40gb primary, 60gb secondary

If there is anything I am in dire need to upgrade, please tell me. BTW my gfx card is agp.

Default Memory is Good

The memory is good .. but the Operating System (Windows Vista) is something you may want to consider holding back on (for now).

Yep - I agree.

I'll be giving it a try though - I abandoned an order for some free Vista disks as part of the express upgrade program because it wanted me to pay S&H, but I just got an e-mail telling me that I'll get them by May 1st [a bit late maybe...]

Still, I suggest waiting 'til Vista SP1 is out before buying it - Vista should be cheaper, too - particularly the non-SP1 versions stores will want to get rid of. You can always install SP1 for free right after purchasing it.

ATM, Vista hasn't had SP1 released for it. However, as with XP, when Microsoft do release it and will include it with all the copies they manufacture after release. Retailers will be keen to get rid of the non-SP1 packs, so you should be able to get it cheaper. Then you can just download or request a free CD from Microsoft [they usually offer it] containing Vista SP1.

I have another question about my rig and vista. I will be getting vista when I have upgrades finished. Which may be a little while, so I'll probably get vista with SP1. I have two hard drives as I mentioned above. I was wondering if I got oem vista installed on my secondary drive, and xp on my primary drive, would this create a dual boot system with xp and vista. I would kinda like that if I were to find out my games don't work on vista, so I could just boot to xp anytime I wanted to play a game. This would also be ideal because I could game on xp without needing to upgrade my vid card.

Yep - you can dual boot with Vista. You don't even need a new hard drive [but since you want to get an OEM copy, you'll probably need one].

While installing Vista you will be given the option to install it to a second hard drive or partition. Just make sure you've formatted everything in NTFS [and created partitions] before you install Vista.

Ya, both of my drives are NTFS. Why would I need a new drive if I wanted the oem copy. I thought it was just like the install disk of the regular vista pack. Can you please explain the differences between OEM and a regular copy of vista.

Some retailers require you to purchase a hardware component with an OEM license to ensure compliance with the System Builder's License [ http://oem.microsoft.com/downloads/P...SB_License.pdf ]. However, you should be able to find one that doesn't.

You won't need a new hard drive, I think I mis-read your post.

Ok. My dad got a hard drive that was huge(I forget how big, but it was around 120-200gb) for only $60. I might get one since my primary has only 5gb left. Thanks for all the info.

If you do decide to get Vista now............well you will be one the new users (along with all of the other Visa users who had to have it because it is new) who will be the testing phase to work out all of the kinks - Thus when they do come out with SP1, etc. myself and possibly others who have responded to your thread will then consider more strongly towards upgrading ourselves - It does have some neat things, but do you really want the headache right now? - "If it ain't broke..don't fix it!!!" - I did not mean to imply that you want the upgrade as others might because it is new, that would be a bad assumption - Think on it some more before you do make the step.
