Default Computer turns off after one second.

Alright, when ever I shut my computer off, I would go to turn it on, and it would turn on for a sec, then shut off, I would then have to turn off the power supply for 6 secs and then turn it back on in order to try to start it up again. After doing this a few times, the computer would start up and run just fine. I have had to do this a few times. So I just decided to let it stay on and never turn it off. lol But I accidently put it to standby, and it shut down. Then when I would go to turn it on, my power supply wouldn't work at all, even after turning it off for a few secs. The LED on my mother board still lights up tho. So I put in a lower wattage power supply to at least get it running. But now it won't go past the one sec of being on at all. So I decided to just try and slove the problem instead of going around it. I took every thing out of the computer, and all I had pluged in was the main lead from the power supply and the 4 pin to the cpu, and a few fans. But it still does the same thing. I took out my CPU and turned it on, low and behold the computer stays on just fine. So I put the cpu back on, and it does the same thing with the one sec and shuts off. So this tells me its prolly the CPU, thing is its only about 6 months old, and I never overclock it. The CPU has NO burn marks at all. Friend said it might be the MoBo. Mainly, is it the MoBo, or the CPU, both are under warrenty still. Any help would be great.

Hi Kaldir,
Firstly welcome to CompuForums, I hope that you can stick around and post here rather than vanish, never to return once we've given you our advice which is a really unfair thing to do.

Putting in a lower-wattage power supply won't help much - try a higher wattage PSU. It sounds to me like your components were drawing more power than the PSU could handle. What wattage was the working one, and the one which you have in now but doesn't work?

Did you build the Computer yourself or did you buy it retail?

I built the computer myself. Back in July of 2006 I bought a new mother board and a new CPU, every thing ran fine untill now. The power supply I was using, that doesnt work any more was a 450 watt. I have had this power supply for over 3 years now with the case I currently have. Not surprised that it died since the fan hasnt worked for some time now. The one I have been trying to get to worth with the computer is a 149 watt or some thing like that. All I have been trying to get running with this low watt is my mobo and HD. I do plan on getting a new power supply ASAP. This low watt power supply runs the computer just fine when the cpu is out. But when the CPU is in, it turns on for a sec, then shuts off. Which it did this with my old 450 watt power supply before it stoped working all together. When the old power supply is pluged in, the green LED light on MoBo lights up just fine, so I know its getting power, but it just doesnt turn on when I hit the on switch. But the main problem right now is just getting the computer to run when the CPU is in. Which my guess is a burned out CPU. It would tend to get up to 150 degrees F while multitasking. Just wanted a 2nd opion before I get a new one. I do plan on getting a P4 instead of this celeron.

And the reason for the low watt power supply, is because its the only other extra one I have. lol

Maybe it's the electric outlet. If that's not it, how old is your computer?
I'd know what it's like, my laptop was built ten years ago.

My power supply that doesn't work is at least 3 years old, and the ps's fan has not worked for at least 1-2 years. But that low watt ps that I have been trying works just fine and when I checked it it is a 200 watt, which is more then enough to run my mobo with just my hd and a few fans. So thats why im wondering if I should replace my mother board or the CPU. Im hoping its the CPU because I don't feel like replacing the HD cause I would have to redo windows. lol

may sound dafft but have you cleaned it ,by clean i mean got very bit of dust and crap from the inside.if you havin't you need to take out every part and dust it clean 1" paint brush works nice then reassemble and see what happens.dust is a big conductor and will short the system if not removed
