Exclamation Computer eating extra space on hard drive

My computer has been running slow for awhile, and it says I only have 20 MB of memory left. However, I keep on deleting big files (such as movies, songs, pictures, programs, etc.), and it still says that it only has 20 MB of memory. Does anyone have a clue what's going on?

Thanks, but I've been doing that. Still, the space is the same.

Default Paging File/Virtual Memory

Often times, the virtual memory (area on the HD that is used when the computer needs more RAM for an application) will change dependent on how much free disk space you have--what would you estimate the amount of data you've deleted has been so far? It might be that the computer re-allocated more room for Virtual Memory once more was freed up.

What OS are you using? Also, are you sure that you're looking at the right drive? Are you sure you're deleting things from the drive that's low on space? It could just be a glitch in the way windows reports the amount of empty space--but I haven't run into anything like this before.

Get an external drive and stick the stuff you don't really need in there. Then when you want that stuff just plug it in.

Arrow System Cleanup

Sounds like you need a System Cleanup. A few basic steps to complete this would be a Disk Defragment, delete cookies & temp files, clear your cache, and uninstall all unnecessary software that you no longer use.

If you are an experienced PC user and familiar with PC maintenance, here is a link to a Checklist for System Cleanup's.

Unfortunately CCleaner doesn't uninstall unnecesary software, nor does it remove half of the objects in the Checklist. At my place of business, these maintenance procedures must be done manually to insure a thorough cleanup.

As for CCleaner, I don't trust it. Me and my tech's have crashed to many OS's with that software -- registry changes that cannot be undone. We have CCleaner on our Black List of recommended free software.

Yes this Is true about how CCleaner looks at reg keys, but for basic clean up of temp and cache files it's good and for basic uninstalls.

sure, but everything you mentioned can easily be done in Windows with built-in utilities like Disk Cleanup or Disk Defragmenter--a third-party utility is rarely necessary, and can often be harmful.
