Default Broken Motherboard maybe?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok i have a Computer that has been in my basement for a little bit and when i brought it up and hooked it up this bios program came up and it checked my Proccessor, memory,cd drives, and virus software. Now it completes then Processor step and then when it goes onto memory it just says checking for a like at least 45 minutes and it is still on. Everything is installed all wires and everything but that step isn't complete. When I first brought it up the fan over the processor was ganging dwon on the bottom of the case and the bottom of the harddrive is missing i am using a two rams. THANK YOU
And if anyone has a winddows XP cd with a password that they can give me that would be cool. thank you

Hi Pentium Skater,
Firstly, welcome to CompuForums.

Secondly - this is likely to be a problem with the memory. Do you know what size the "two rams" are? On some computers they need to be in in a certain order.

Also, we cannot discuss illegal activity so we can't help you with the XP CD. May I remind you that we track your IP address and with this information we can, if required by law, assist law enforcement agencies in tracking your home address.

You won't be able to find a legal one yourself. Even if the key is generated and XP thinks it's valid it's still illegal. Also Microsoft will detect your computer at the next Windows Update and lock you out of it. We have a policy of keeping illegal discussion off the forum which is viewable by anyone on the internet, including Microsoft employees. We don't want the site shut down, despite all liability for messages posted belonging to their authors. However it is extremely unlikely [but not guaranteed that they will not] that someone will visit, it has happened in the past. Microsoft usually settles out of court first anyway.

It all depends on the computer and how good it is. Generally if it's less than 3 years old then you could probably get it to a fairly good standard.

but if it's getting stuck could it be the hard drive or the mother board or ram i don't know and i don't want my computer to just sit on the bios page all day saying checking memory lol.So my hard drive may be broken becuase it is mmissing the bottom side of the casing but i still hear it spinning and stuff so that may not be it so i wonder what it is?

Missing the bottom side of the casing? Do you mean that you see a a PCB with lots of chips on the underside of the hard drive? Most are. If it's getting stuck on the memory scanning then it's highly likely that your RAM is to blame. Like I said, try taking out one RAM module - it may only be one that's faulty.

lol i love noobs. i love to help where i can.( nothing meant by the "noob comment by the way) i started somewhere. first of all try taking one of the sticks of ram out and try to boot into the operating system. if it doesnt work trade the sticks around and try again. now if that doesnt work then its probly not the ram cause the chances of 2 sticks dieing at the same time are slim and none (ive been wrong before tho, i think it was a tuesday.) anyways if that doesnt work you are gonna wanna move on to your hard drive. the only real way to check this is to swap it our for another one. you can get another one online for like 40 bucks. or if you watch the thrift stores you can get one cheap. if that doest work than there is no point in trying to fix it cause its an old peice of crap that doesnt work. lol. anyways if there is anything else let me know. by the way make sure when you start the computer that you dont have anything in the floppy drive or the cd drive. bye for now

I do not think this is a problem with the hard drive.

As rawdawg and I have both mentioned, try swapping the RAM sticks to see if it's a problem. When your computer is talking about memory, it's talking about the RAM.
