| Hey folks. On a scale of 1-10, I would give myself a 6 for computer savyness. So, any advice here would help. I am working on a friend's computer. Her USB drive works, but will not recognize a memory stick or a camera input. I know that it works because the video-conferencing camera works. We even tried to use the USB port on the back of the computer and unfortunately I was not in the driver's seat and the person that was buzzed through a request for a driver to recognize the memory stick. Long story short, I think I just need to download a driver that will recognize the memory stick and camera. Any advice on how I determine what I need?? Please help if my logic in this doesn't make sense, either. THANKS!! ![]() ________________________ This user added the following: ________________________ ok, I have figured out the camera, but now just need to figure out the memory stick. Why does a computer even need a driver to run a memory stick?? Anyway, any advice would be wonderful. BTW, I'm working with a Windows 98 environment. Last edited by abick; 01-13-2007 at 06:15 PM. | Hi abick, Welcome to CompuForums! I hope that you can help us by posting here often - after all we're here to help you, free of charge. Also it would be great if you could add yourself to the member map: http://www.compuforums.org/vbgooglemapme.php This may seem strange these days where everyone runs XP, but Windows 98 only shipped with the bare minimum of drivers, enough to get a keyboard, mouse, and monitor working [at a basic level]. When the operating system was written USB was fairly new, and USB memory sticks and digital cameras were virtually unheard of. However if your friend has the CD-Roms for the digital camera and memory stick [if it didn't ship with one the packaging will tell you where to download it] you will need to install the drivers from the CD-Rom and/or download. Also, do other USB devices that have previously been installed work correctly?

| Thanks Ashley..yeah, that's what I was afraid of. Wish I thought I could get her to upgrade. The have downloaded the driver for the camera, but it's still not working. I am still investigating the camera situation with Kodak. I have a feeling that it's not compatible with Win 98. The memory stick is mine and is just a generic that I bought when I still lived in Denver. It never came with software at all and it's always worked on any other computer. So, I guess at this point I hope to figure out her camera situation at bare minimum. I am going to try to get Kodak's tech support to help but I have this crazy feeling that they will tell me that it's the computer! We'll see. Any other ideas? I will post my solutions for others in the same predicament. Thanks for this forum! I will visit often. I was happy to find it this morning. |

| I look forward to your visits in the future - and thank you for signing up It could well be that Kodak didn't even bother writing drivers for Windows 98 - it's quite different to Windows NT-based products like XP. [98 is actually based on MS-DOS]. But you should have much more luck with the memory stick, there are plenty of generic drivers for these. To find them just pop the memory stick into a computer on XP and note down the manufacture it mentions on the "Windows has found new hardware" balloon/tooltip popup. Then you can use a search engine to find the Win98 driver. An alternative solution to getting pictures off the camera would be to purchase a card reader. You can get cheap card readers from Card Reader, Smart Card Reader, Memory Card Reader, SD Card Reader at Newegg.com Most there are USB - and some can be installed inside of the computer - but if you go for this route then make sure it's Win98 compatible. [I'm assuming that you are in the US and somewhere where Newegg ships to]
