Default USB Problem?

I recently reformatted my hard drive. I re-installed Windows 98 and Office 2000. Everything seems to be running great except now anything that runs through a USB port isn't working. My digital camera won't download, my printer and scanner won't work. I can't figure out what happened. I have a Gateway computer model number
Gateway " 4000655 if that helps.

Hi there and welcome to CompuForums! I hope that you continue to post here in the future.

Since Windows 98 is an older operating system, you need to have the drivers for almost all USB devices. So have you re-installed the drivers for these devices as well? If you have then we can investigate further.

Thanks! I think I have downloaded the drivers but to tell the truth I am not sure. What is the best way to check?

You can check by going into Control Panel, selecting "System", choosing the Hardware tab and then the "Device Manager" button. Devices listed are plugged in, devices with a yellow question mark or warning triangle have a problem with the driver or no driver installed, and devices not listed are either not plugged in or do not have the driver installed.

I am seeing the following only when I check this:
Intel 82801AA USB Universal Host Controller
USB Root Hub
USB Composite Device
Brother MFC3100C USB Port (Fax Modem)

I have the MFC 3100C installed but it isn't working. The only other USB port I have is where I connect either my HP215 Digital Camera or my HP flatbed Scanner. Before I reformatted my hard drive these where all working.

Your Universal Host Controller and root hub are the bits inside the computer which connect the USB ports to everything else inside.

The USB Composite device is likely to be your either your digital camera or your scanner, but it dosen't recognise the model name without the drivers. And your all-in-one printer is getting recognised, but again I don't think that it has the drivers. The drivers should be on all the disks that came with the devices. If you don't have the drivers/disks then please list the model numbers of all of the devices and I will find downloads for you.

Well, here is a twist. I re-installed my HP scanner last night and now my digital camera works. The scanner works fine too. The only problem that I can see remains the MFC 3100c.

right, i guess there is a bit of an unexplainable problem, have you checked out the brother support site for help about the fax machine? that is my only thought at the moment, if you have please message back and we will dream up another solution.

I had contacted them about the problem and was told to download drivers from their website which I did. It hasn't helped. Unless I didn't download the right ones or in the right way...
