Default Making an Avatar

To make an Avatar in Paint.net (free software, but will also work in PSP with a little tweaking)

1. Open a photo or picture.

2. Use the rectangle selection tool to select the part of the picture you want to use (it is easier if you keep it square by checking the size on the bottom bar). If you want to use the whole picture go to 4 and skip this part.

3. Once you have your selection click the Crop to selection icon (or Ctrl+Shift+X).

4. Now go to Image-Resize (Ctrl+R) and set Resampling on Bicubic and size to 110, or whatever size you are allowed, with Maintain aspect ratio ticked. Click OK.

5. Resizing can blur an image a little so now go to Effects – Photo – Sharpen and set the amount to 2. Click OK. Check avatar and repeat sharpen if necessary.

6. Now go to File – Save as… Name the file and select jpeg file type. Click save and the Save configuration window will open. Check the file size and reduce the Quality setting if necessary to reduce the file size to that permitted. Click OK.

Your Avatar is now saved ready to use.
