| I cannot make Windows Automatic Update work! In Windows XP, I go to the Security Center thorugh the task tray, and try to active it through there, and the Auto Update won't turn on. I try to turn in on by going to Security Center via the Control Panel, no cigar. I have even gone so far as to access it through services.msc at the command prompt. However, what takes the cake is when I go to the Windows Update site, and it tells me that I can't update my computer....since I DON'T HAVE THE AUTO UPDATE ACTIVE!!!! It's days like this that make me wonder why I have spent 15 years defending a nation that provides safety and shelter to the morons at Microsoft.... If anyone can possibly give me some advice as to how to attack this issue, I would be infernally grateful. SgtPsychosis |

| IF I try to turn on the Updates using the Security Center (either through the Task Tray or by accessing it through the Control Panel), nothing happens. According to this screen, the Update selection is not active. I click on the Auto Update at the bottom, it brings up the Auto Update menu in a new window, and this reflects that I have auto update turned on. If I go through services.msc, it defaults to startup type Disabled, service status Stopped...okay. This is innane. I heve services.msc open, walking myself through the steps so I can type in here EXACTLY what I am doing....and now Updates will stay turned on. If it weren;t for the fact that my organization uses all the sexy windows based programs, and more often than not I bring my work home with me I WOULD scrap windows for Linus!!! THanks SgtPsychosis |

| From Automatic Updates 'Help': If your computer is part of a network, your network administrator might have configured your Automatic Updates options for you. Network administrators often need to implement systemwide changes to help make sure that the network operates smoothly and more securely whenever changes, such as updates, are applied. Your options might also be grayed out if you are not an administrator for your computer. Only administrators can add or remove programs, including updates.

| Windows Guru: WINE? Heard of it. In passing. In a dark alley, but don't know what it is. I know just enough of about hardware and software to be moderatley dangerous to anyone who takes my advise. Sigh-Clone: I am running a free standing lapton, not linked into any network, with myself as the administrator. Since I live in a relatively small apartment area, and my system is plugged directly into the wall, I even have the wireless deactivated. Of course, this issue is fixed. Now, the damn thing won't recognize my card reader..... |
