Yep, I use most of these programs. I don't use any software that you have to pay for. My laptop is 100% legal, and the software & OS cost me a grand total of £0.

VLC really is the bestprogram you can ever download though!

Thanks for the awesome list Mr Pickles!! I actually use some of the programs in the list already, but will be looking into more of them! It's always nice when you can use good software that doesn't cost you a ton of money!! Thanks again for the great info!

i use alot of free software and i dont want to sound rude but that comments a bit silly

why should we pay for software...

because some takes years to make and cost alot of money to make if everyone had that attitude people would stop making it because they couldnt make a living from it anymore

Right on! Most freeware have a link to Pay Pal or other such facility for donations if you like the software.

Open source is where people develop code and donate it to the community. Whole alternatives to Windows, Office and many, many more things exist. Most routers run some form of Linux because licensing another OS would make them more expensive.

A lot of money is made from providing support. The whole reason for open source is to stop charging and making money from software and start making it free and higher-quality than the commercial counterparts. Instead of 10-15 developers, if something is open sourced it can have many more developers and testers.
