Yes Open Office is really good. Plus its compatible with Microsoft Office documents, apart from documents created in Office 2007, but this is being addressed in the new version which will support office 2007. Its currently in beta stage at the moment

Good call on the open-source developers. I really didn't know that. It makes sense though. Limiting the development of such products to just one or two developers for a company, though those two might be crazy smart, it's still not going to be as good as something that is tried and tested by a thousand other smart individuals. Also, I've never seen VLC, how is it different (better) than other media players?

ive got some more cool open source programs which i use:
Tuxguitar - free alternative to Guitar Pro, it even opens up all guitar pro files.
Songbird - iTunes like media player with cool add ons
Ardour - Professional audio workstation (Mac + Linux only)
GIMP - If Photoshop were free it would be called GIMP
VirtualBox - Like VMware but free.
Bluefish - Similar to Dreamweaver.
