Default Utorrent troubles

I recently downloaded Utorrent, and I can't get the thing to work! I found the file I want and it was about 1.75 gigs, clicked download and it started, but my average speed is about 0.2 kb/s. I'm thinking that it might be the port forwarding that is messed up. One of the many questions I have is how do I tell if I am using a static IP? Second, if I enable static, do what is the chance I cut off internet to all other computers in my house? I would greatly appreciate any help!

You don't need a static IP for Bittorrent.

It is most likely you are getting slow speeds due to bad port forwarding - PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall has all you need.

Alternatively your ISP may limit torrent traffic, and in that case you will need to be a bit more creative.

Could you expand on the idea of "A bit more creative"? I'm not very good with port forwarding...

uTorrenet is great, it downloads things at like 50x the speed of azureus at the expense of raping every resource on your computer. Half the time it jams up my computer due to its extensive resource rapage. So I usually have to gamble whether I wanna run it or not and wake up possibly to a frozen computer.

Well, decided to try to download what I wanted in Limewire, and it contained the worst virus I have ever seen. It seemed fine until my Firefox started shuting down randomly, then I ran my Avast! and caught about 20 trojan horses and malware. Then, I thought I was good but then my desktop kept changing from clasical view to new view. I found the problem, but even thing I tried would end up with my computer shuting down. I had to Ghost Ax my entire system and reinstall everything so I don't think I will be trying to download anything for a while...

Basically, uTorrent is the best BitTorrent client I've ever used. But it won't scan for viruses files you're downloading. So be more careful when trying to download something, there are a lot of people that put trojans and viruses into the files they're posting on the most popular BitTorrent Trackers. You'd probably want to find a less popular tracker and read the comments posted to the file before you actually download it.

Just make sure your file has a lot of seeders and you'll be fine (usuallY) in terms of viruses and/or trojans. People won't seed the file if it's got shit in it.

Are you running through a router? if so, it needs to have the ports forwarded, you can check what ports uTorrent is running on in the settings, to forward the ports go into ur router (it's probably something along the lines of 192.168.1.1 (just type that into ur browser's URL) or 192.168.1.100 - there's a few other variations, my belkin uses a weird one -b ut those 2 are the most common.
Then forward the ports you looked up in uTorrent. It'll be called "port forwarding" - go figure :-P

Yeah... don't use LimeWire. My favorite bit torrent client is BitComet. Also though, make sure you're forwarding all the right ports. You probably don't have a static IP, but at least set it up so you have one on your network. That way you can get the listening port and such forwarded directly to your computer.

Has anyone gotten in trouble with your service provider for using utorrent or one like it? I recieved a letter from Cox (my ISP) and they said that if I don't delete it they will cut off our internet. That sucks for me!

Sounds to me like you need another provider.
