Default Computer's running slow with wierd problems

I've got my cousins computer and it is running really slow. When I look at the processes the CPU is running up around 80% and the iexplorer.exe process keeps appearing and disappearing on the list. It that the User name says System and not the user I am logged in as.

The other problem is that I can't get the NIC card to get an IP address. Everything appears to be set up right. When I do an "ipconfig" it gives this error:

I have run the McAfee anti-virus scan as well as Ad-Aware and found nothing. I can't get it on the internet to download any other spyware program.

Any info would be a great help. Thanks

1) Did Restarting help? 2) Is there a PATH variable? If there is no way for the OS to know where to look for commands, it won't be able to find them and execute them properly.

Any path you have should include:
%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\Sy stem32\Wbem

You can find this 2 ways: 1) at the dos prompt, type PATH, and hit enter
2) Right-Click My Computer, chose Advanced (Tab), and then on Environment Variables (button), then in the box near the bottom, scroll down to PATH, Double-Click it, and review the list. Choose CANCEL if what you need is there.

If it's not there, create a new variable called PATH, and enter the above minimum in the value field.

Thanks for the response. I did end up finding out the problem. The tcpip.sys file was missing. It also had a ton of viruses that for some reason McAfee and AdAware didn't pick up. I have cleaned all of them out but one. The only one that I can find now is "My Way Search Assistant". This little bugger is not wanting to budge. I have found several different forums on this program but none of the fixes seem to work.

Try Castlecops web site. they have a lot of helpful info on getting rid of nasties. I switched off of McAfee (provided free by my work), for the same reason, it didn't do a very good job.

Apparently the MyWaySA "anonymously" tracks your web browsing and collects data on your computing witch is something no-one wants on their system.

If you have a dell computer a bunch of em' have it installed by dell from the factory and its pretty annoying to get off. heres a fix i found on another forum:

The folder (on my pc at least) for Dell's My Way Search Assistant was:
C:\Program Files\MyWaySA

The *.msi associated with the program was:
C:\Windows\Installer\62e8.msi

By right-clicking the 62e8.msi and choosing "uninstall", you can remove the My Way Search Assistant.

If this works let me know and if not i'll try to find some other fixes.
