Default DVD Ripper/converter

A buddy of mine is big into making his own movies, and I told him I would put it on my MP3 and show people at my school, but I have no idea on how to make a DVD into a AVI format. Does anyone know how to do this? I've heard of DVD Rippers before, and their very common on the internet, but I don't if this is the right thing for me. Any Ideas?

if your looking for a DVD to AVI converter/ripper then the link below is a good place to download one.
Plato DVD Ripper - Reviews and free Plato DVD Ripper downloads at Download.com

It's only a trial but its very fast and i've used it before so there aren't any bugs.

DVD Shrink is the best free DVD ripper.
DVD Shrink: Shrink your DVDs to fit DVDR!

I also recommend you check out Guide, How To, Tutorial and Article list for information on backing up DVDs into a variety of formats.

Yes, if you go to the links and read the information provided, you will find that you can get the videos in AVI format.

Every linux user I know either has OS X or XP (and one vista ) as a backup. Linux is good - but like OS X (at least in my opinion) it's not up to par with the rest of society in terms of file formats. I haven't exactly come across the Word:Linux binaries yet. Not to mention there's not as many programs for it and WINE's a joke, in my opinion.

I was running kubuntu on my main file server and I still had windows XP (dual boot) and Windows XP MC on this laptop... It's almost needed to have another OS if you daily the thing.

I guess you don't know me then because I just have Kubuntu Gutsy and no MS or Apple software as a back up.

DVD Shrink all the way man. And on a side note, why are you using .avi format? if your mp3 player is Divx compatible i recommend also downloading the Divx converter, it significantly compacts the files and you can fit at least 2 times as many movies on your player.
