| I've been downloading some tv show episodes off limewire and they are in some avi format. wmp will play the sound but there is nothing but black. I am not sure what codec I need or where to find it. as of now wmp says that the its using "LogMeIn Video Decoder" which i thought was a little odd. i have logmein installed so i guess it found that somewhere and is trying to use it for this, but thats just a guess. if anyone here could shed some light on this i would appreciate it. thanks!

| Why don't you just download a new video player....Go to Free Software Downloads and Software Reviews - Download.com and search for one and I'm sure you'll find one.

| Actually, this is a codec issue, a new player won't solve it. Go here to download the K-Lite one: Codec Guide: K-Lite Codec Pack and other useful stuff BP

| It should be said that a lot of the free codecs and players today probably contain malware/spyware of some kind and should be used wisely. Often adult web sites use these to exploit the fact that people love to watch videos on their computer, and will entice the user to allow it to download the codecs. (Thank Microsoft for encouraging this behavior.) I strongly recommend that you go through your Add/Remove programs and uninstall and unfamilar software or video codes. Then download and install VLCPlayer -- it's free and easy to use. It wouldn't be a bad idea to do a spyware scan, too with Spybot just in case.

| Bull to whoever said it's a codec problem - new player won't solve it. Download VLC (videolan player) - it will play ANYTHING - it doesn't use codecs is I think the reason - but it'll try to play anything - it for sure will play any type of audio/video file I've ever thrown at it and will even play isos (DVD images) as a regular movie (like an avi). VLC plays everything - it will even attempt to play a word document if you tried. I've never ran into a media file that VLC won't play. Also, it uses VERY little resources plus can amp your volume to 400% than that of WMP or the like. Complete awesomeness for watching movies - not the best for playing songs as it doesn't have "playlists" and can't play multiple files - but there's nothing it won't play... |

| yeah, everything uses Codecs, maybe VLC comes with codecs, I dont know, but it will use Codecs - Codecs are like drivers, with out a Driver hardware wont work!

Like I said, it'll even play images (such as .iso's) of DVD's. The other point (at the op) is where somebody said that it might be a video codec problem, and you can mess around with different media players, and different codec packs trying to get it to work - or you can just dl 9mb worth of VLC and it'll play anything I've come across without having to deal with installing more codecs and such. Also, I heard something called Media Player Classic was quite versatile as well, though I've never got around to testing it. |
