Default Great...another problem :(

I was deleting the SP2 patch from my windows, but I lost power in the middle it, and now when I start it up, It goes to the windows loading screen, before it goes to the screen names, then gets stuck, and won't go any father. Is there anyway to fix this?

I've been trying to fix my desktop up for wireless, but SP2 has a bug in it that won't let me do it, so I was just going to get rid of it...n e ways, I lost my copy of XP, so I'm pretty screwed...

When your machine starts, hold F8 (after the POST BEEP). This should let you get the launch screen that allows you to get to Safe-Mode, or Last Known Good config. This screen will be black w/ white text.
Try that, Boot to last known good configuration, then you can remove that patch.

I tried that, and in safe mode, but when I open in safe mode, I get a bunch of white text, then it just stops and won't go any farther...I'm about to give up on this computer...anyone want a broken compaq

What was the last line?

Do you have your OS cd? you can do a couple of things with it. 1) you can do a non-destructive repair of the OS, or 2) you could use the recovery console to help get the system working.

1) Boot to the cd, Accept the license and chose to Install XP. When you get the option, chose REPAIR and it will go through the setup as if it was installing from scratch. The downside, you will need to update your OS again, which can be time consuming considering somewhere around 93 updates (plus windows update software and windows installer) since the release of SP2. More to come next tuesday.

2) a little more command line driven and not as easy as 1, but you can get the command list and work within those abilities if you know what you need to repair.

Hmmm... you mentioned it is a compaq? Is it still the original installation?

If so, when you boot try hitting f10. There may be a built in recovery partition on the HDD. This would allow you to reset the machine to it's original configuration without the cd's.

If not, you gotta get a new OS.

Good Luck.

what happens if you get to 'Last known good configuration' ? It happened to me once that an electrical power interruption kinda messed up my stuff, but this option worked fine. And also try to check the memory sticks. try to get a working computer and run MEMTEST86 with your memory sticks

Thanks for the help, but I just went and bought a new computer. It would have cost me the same to fix that one anyways.

You could have simply reformatted the machine instead. There are operating systems other than Windows available.

It was a $100 dollar computer. Nothing fancy. AMD 2.0 processor, Gforce 6200, 2x100g HD, 2xMemorex DVD burners. Got a pretty good deal on it

Where did you find a $100 laptop? Was it used?

I don't think it was a laptop, as if it had those specs - it would be hotter than the Sahara!
