| Noob question, but here goes... I have an old desktop that I have replaced with a new laptop (Vista Premium O.S.). The laptop didn't come with Word, but the old desktop had Word factory-installed as part of Works Suite. I have all the discs for Works Suite. Can I install the Word software from the old desktop to my new laptop? What steps do I need to take to accomplish this, since Word was registered to the old desktop? I tried searching this question, but wasn't successful. |

| Hi there grammon, Firstly, welcome to CompuForums. I hope that you can visit our forum often in the future and post - rather than just receiving our help and advice, and then never visiting again. We provide our help for free, and all we ask in return is that you participate in our forum and refer your friends, or consider a premium membership. Only taking advice and not giving back in some way is like stealing from everyone who has helped you. According to Microsoft's EULA, you cannot transfer it legally. However you can use an open source alternative, such as OpenOffice, which is free.

| Thankyou Ashley for the prompt reply. Don't know how much I can assist others due to very limited knowledge, but I understand your point. Thought I could just "unregister " the software from the old machine and re-register it to the new laptop. After all, I paid Microsoft once for it. Guess it isn't a perfect world after all. Regards Jack |

| The thing with the license is that technically your computer manufacturer paid for the license, and it's likely they would have included the cost to them [and in bulk: virtually zero] in the price of your computer. Give OpenOffice a try though, it's a great alternative and I use it myself. And don't worry about having limited knowledge - you can still tell others and post in our non-technical forums: http://www.compuforums.org/general/

| Much agreed. OpenOffice.org is a wonderful suite. Every PC that leaves my shop has it installed. OpenOffice.org has the same features that MS Office has -- the only difference is the GUI (and price). Give it a try for a few weeks, and if you don't like it, uninstall it. |

| I just got ubuntu into the dual-boot configuration with xp. Thank you Tom, for your informative video. All of the other tutorials seems more complicated, but yours was nice and simple. It solved all of my headaches. Back on the subject, Ubuntu seems to comes default with openoffice, but I've never used it yet. This is mainly due to the fact that it's summer vacation, which means no school. It seems good, but I have to really put it through it's paces during school to see how good it is. |
