Default dreaded Java Runtime Environment!

Hi there,

I just posted a bit of background in the Introductions forum.

I am not a very computer literate person (being of a certain age!) and have a problem with Java Runtime Env. Let me try to explain:

Being British and living in Spain, I had no alternative than to load onto my PC an "unofficial" copy of Windows XP from a disk in English. Internet Explorer was on it, but I have not updated it for a couple of years, as I use Mozilla Firefox as my browser, and it updates regularly without problem. I think the current one is 2.0.0.4.

Sometimes I need to use Java Runtime Environment. Java SE 6 Update 1 is installed but since the last updating of Firefox it refuses to work. The only way it will operate is by my closing down Firefox and using the antiquated version of Internet Explorer. This is obviously not satisfactory. Luckily I use Adware and have Panda Antivirus installed to take care of the inevitable tracking cookies which appear.

I have tried earlier versions of the Java but they dont seem to work with Firefox either. Is the best thing to uninstall both Firefox and Java and start again with the 2 of them? Or should I / could I safely update Explorer without causing damage and without Windows breathing down my neck?

In whichever case, which versions do I use and how do I do it?

Many thanks, but keep it simple please!

Mark

Hi there Mark,

Java is a bit of a touchy app when it comes to updates. I'm however running the latest version of Java Runtime Environment, and Firefox 2.0.0.4 fine side-by-side.
When was the last time you updated JRE? If it's been a while, try downloading and installing the latest version:

Hi again Ash.

No, the latest Java RE 6 update 1 doesnt work with my Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.4. despite removing and reinstalling Java and restarting my Browser. Puzzled?

Any further ideas?

Thanks,

Mark
