Default DVD on to Hard disc drive?

Hello again :-)

This is a basic question I am sure, how do I get a Film on dvd on to My computer so I can watch it back with out needing the disc?

Is there any free software out there to do this?
Also what do you need to do to get windows media player 11 to play DVD's?

Thank you

For legal reasons, can I confirm that you will only be making backups in accordance with any and all copyright laws that apply to you?

yes this is just for me to put my existing dvd's which i paid for on to my Hdd and watch with surround sound. I have been wathcing from the discs directly, however the Rom drive makes quite alot of noise, which is why I want to do this.

If you rather not say then it does not matter.

Graham.

If you're running on Windows, give DVDRip a try - DVD Decrypter download DVDDecrypter.
Once you have made the ISOs, then use the Daemon Tools app [there is a link to it on that page] to play them without burning.

Ripit4me is also another good program that you can use. I use it a lot and is very easy to work with.

hi guys thanks for the info, it looks a bit complicated to me,
I though it would be easy to do. I dont know what ISO and all the other stuff means. I thought it would be as easy as putting cd's onto itunes!

think ill give it a miss and just watch the films on my TV!

It's relatively easy once you know how - an ISO file is just an image of a CD/DVD. Most burning programs accept them.

Yes, if you use a tool that'll fool the computer into thinking the ISO is a real disk in a real drive [Google for 'drive emulator freeware' and you will find plenty of tools]

Yes, I find DVD Decrypter the easiest method. However, be aware that a dual-layer DVD movie can take up to 9GB of hard disk space. It's okay for watching a movie and then deleting it, but for archiving, it takes up quite a bit of space, and unless you have GOBS of HD space, it's not necessarily the best solution.

Regarding playing back the video after you have imported it from the DVD onto your hard drive. I like to use Media Player Classic (a free, un-invasive, stand-alone player that plays anything as long as you have the codec to do so)--all you have to do is drag the "VIDEO_TS" folder (should appear under the directory you imported the DVD to) to MPC and it will automatically play the movie just like you inserted it into your DVD player.

There's no need to make an ISO of the movie unless you want to burn it back to DVD later on as a backup. Though I have noticed that Windows Media Player likes to play ISOs that I have mounted with something like Daemon Tools rather than just dragging the video_ts folder to it. But this is a rare occasion.

I won't go into all the other awesome MPC features because I don't want to bore you. Hope it all works out alright.
