Default Security Software

I was wondering what people thought about internet security software. I've used Norton and it works, but it seems to make my computer run slow. I don't really have any threats in my network except from stuff on internet & e-mail. Does anybody have any recommendations on something that won't bog down the computers?

Norton is well-known for causing slowdowns and generating false viruses to make you buy the product - and missing real ones.

Here are my recommendations [all can be found for free using Google]:
-Antivirus: Avast Home Edition
-Antispyware: Windows Defender
-Firewall: Comodo Personal Firewall, or Zonealarm

Lightbulb Internet Security Software

Hi. Thanks for the post. This one's right up my alley ... it's one of my specialty's.

As for Symantic Norton Internet Security (IS), yes, the product is excellent and well maintained with frequent database/virus definitions updates. One of the pitfalls of Norton IS is exactly what you mentioned -- it's 'weight' on the Operating System. Seems as if Norton can bring your PC to a crawl. Other than that, Norton is good. If I were to purchase an Internet Security Suite, it would be Norton.

However ... there are many other security suites that are free, smaller, BETTER, and don't gobble up your system resources.

At the top of my list I recommend AVG Anti-Virus, AVG Anti-Spyware, and AVG AntiRootkit. They are free. Download all three AVG applications here.

Next, need a good firewall? I recommend ZoneAlarm by Checkpoint. Fantastic product, and free as well.

As an alternative to all the above, I recommend COMODO software, with FREE LIFETIME LICENSE. These guys will blow your socks off with high-quality software. Visit COMODO here.

COMODO offer free lifetime licenses on all their products:

I hope to convince Ash in allowing me to upload more than 37 free Internet Security Software posts. If he does, you'll be able to find this same exact information here at CompuForums.org in a seperate sub-forum. This way, you'll always have access to the latest and best Internet Security Software available -- FREE.

Whoops - try AVG then. While I have found it has missed viruses [on a machine full of trojans], I am sure that it has been improved. I might even give it a go.

I haven't used any software firewall for a while now as my internet connection is protected by a hardware firewall on my wireless router, and I plan on installing one on my secondary wireless router.

What is the best anti-virus program? Norton has some compatibility issues.

Well I can not really say what is best, however I use AVG anti virus (free download) based on recommendations from this forum (and my IT manger at work) I have been using it on my rig since i built it 3 months ago, all ok so far. I also have AVG anti spy ware and Comodo firewall.

AVG was also well reviewed in a popular PC mag earlier this year (cant remember the name) it came 4th out of 10, and considering most of the programs in the review were paid for 4th is rather impressive for a free to download program!

It would also appear from tests I have done that the above programs are not very resource hungry. I ran 3Dmark06 with and with out these programs running and my score only improved by 2 when they were off!

hacker45, please start your own thread to ask questions rather than hijack another. Also if you wish to advertise, please do so in your signature rather than appending a link to the end of your post. If you violate this rule again, which you have already been warned about in the past, then we will have no choice but to ban you.
