Default Is the internet nearly full?? Sureley Not?

Quote:
FACT: In 3 years 20 Average households will generate more traffic that the entire internet did in 1996
According to a AT&T executive speaking at the Web2.0 eforum the surge on online content is at the centre of the most dramatic changes affecting the Internet today. The ongoing swell in bandwidth demands has been dubbed "the exaflood" Many people fear that the increased data volume could overwhelm the internet.

Infrastructure upgrade??
Well, we have been here before, In 1996, Ethernet co-creator Bob Metcalfe predicted that increasing email traffic would overwhelm the internet. The following year he publicly retracted this statement.

When BT, whose 21CN network upgrade is currently ongoing, were asked if the internet would run out by 2010 their reply was "BT monitors the network very carefully to ensure that we are always ahead of the game, we are currently investing heavy in the core network to ensure that capacity does not become an issue in the future"

What are your opinions on this? Do you think we are heading for internet meltdown by 2010?? Or is this all just hype?

Honestly, I agree with the statement by BT in that I think those is control of monitoring and updating are ahead of the game and have the ability to make the necessary changes to accommodate the increase if need be. I base my assumption on the clear and dire importance of the internet and the services it offers. There is basically no business in the world today that could operate or function efficiently without the use of these services. Because we are so reliant on it, and we know this, I think those in charge are (or at least should be) planning ahead so that we are not left without, at least for very long, in times of trouble.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the internet as an entity doesn't actually exist! I always thought that the word internet was short for international network (or something like that.) Soooo... so long as the servers on that network are kept up to date and there are enough of them then how can the internet get filled up? I might be way off beam here as these are only my thoughts and not based on any real facts

Its not so much of a Space issue, but more of a bandwidth problem. The demands of traffic passing down lines that are out of date and need replacing is more the issue.

In the UK British Telecom are beginning to upgrade their lines to fibre optic cables instead of the old traditional cables being used at the moment. These fibre optic cables will allow a faster bandwidth by alot.

There is also the issue that the severs all around the world are not equipped well enough to deal with the high demands that are currently being used. And a major upgrade of all servers may be needed to handle this growing demand for online entertainment. So if a company had say 1000 servers, and 3 years down the line they were not up to the task, then they would have to upgrade all of these to continue providing a service. This is not going to be possible for all providers to do, therefore these companies are asking for government funding to help ease this.

Looks like we may have to go back to playing Monopoly and Scrabble then - and I mean the board games not the online versions!

I love monopoly and scrabble. What classic board games. I wonder if anybody actually still plays these board games any more??
