Virgin Media to offer 50Gbps broadband
Roll out will begin this year following successful trial Following its successful 'North-South' trial, Virgin Media will begin to roll out its 50 gigabits per second (Gbps) broadband service later this year. The trial, which took place at the end of last month and is thought to be the first of its kind in the UK, utilised Juniper routers and Nortel's Adaptive Optical Engine to carry 40Gbps traffic on the Virgin network over a 350km stretch between London and Manchester. "Our aim for this trial was to ensure that we continue to meet the growing capacity needs of the high-speed services we deliver," explained Daniel Hennessy, director of technical architecture at Virgin Media. "The live trial demonstrated how Juniper Networks high-performance routers can be used by service providers to leverage existing investments and cost-effectively and efficiently scale their networks to meet the demands of next-generation services," added Opher Kahane, senior vice president and head of High End Systems Business Unit, Juniper Networks. The new high-speed service will be offered in 2, 10, 20 and 50Gbps packages but an exact date for the service has yet to be announced. WOW - Thats fast..... but will you get a good service?? After all Virgin Media dont have a great track record. |

It's Virgin Media... you'll be lucky to see 50kbps, 25kbps if you download a file or two and they limit you. Then you can pay 25p per minute for someone in a country where they'll never have to suffer Virgin Media to tell you to reboot your PC and modem when it doesn't work.

Virgin'll never pull this off, not when they can't even provide 2mbps 24 hours a day.

I agree. Im with Virgin and Im supposed to get up to 8mbps but I dont see much evidence of it. They tell me they are improving the service and I must admit, I dont now get messages telling me Im not connected when I am, but I still wouldnt pay anymore for promises.

It would be if it was from anyone other than Virgin Media.

When they say they are "rolling out its 50 gigabits per second (Gbps) broadband service" does that mean that's the entire capacity they can distribute meaning that 50gbps has to be distributed equally amongst all users?
