Default Very slow internet

Any ideas why? Ive just checked on speedtest.net and got download speed of 98kbps and upload speed of 322kbps. im supposed to be on upto 8mbps !!!

Frequently, I get the page cannot be displayed message, you are not connected to the internet.I then go onto my sons PC with a worse spec than mine, using the same wireless router and his can access the page. I try again after 10 mins or so and get on.

So frustrating . any ideas?? Can it be anything like Nortons firewall doing something.?

Id be grateful for any help.

The most likley cause for this is your ISP. My ADSL isn't the most fastest or stablest thing in the evenings and I had similar speeds earlier - who provides your internet access, what exchange do you connect to and have you tried rebooting your modem / router [whichever connects to the phone line]?

Shouldn't do. The simplest way to reboot it would be to simply unplug it from the mains and plug it back in again.

Although your issues might be something to do with Virgin - I left them [after being with Eurobell / Telewest for 10+ years] because they've introduced traffic shaping and throttling - have you downloaded any large files recently [since 4pm today]?

Funny you should say that. There was a Java update I was requested to download. Could that effect it? But I think you're probably right about Virgin....they'll probably tell me I live too far away from the exchange....which is actually less than 2 miles away.

Ive just had a look at Virgins website and the service status...its orange, stating Broadband service is running slowly or has intermittent problems...since 12/11 !!!!

So I think Ill give up and try again tomorrow.

Thanks for your help Ash!

I think that orange light may as well be on their permanently!
Unfortunately I was on cable, and due to their mess up we couldn't even keep our Virgin phone number when we moved to ADSL. The companies that Virgin Media was have completely gone down the pan and flushed the chain on their way.

Some (cable) modems (at least here in the states) can only be reset by pressing a well hidden button, not by cycling the power. Check around for that. Also, most cable networks (in the past) have worked with hubs, not switches, which slows down as more users log in.

As for telephone ADSL, it may very well be as ash has experienced, with shaping... I'm sorry. Watch your modem, I've recently had a bad connection, and I would get poor network speeds, mainly due to the modem having to re-synch with the servers. This was fixed with a new cable and new splitter for my dataline.

Now, if your ISP does what Comcast has started doing here, I'm REALLY sorry! (they would introduce artificial kill signals seeming to originate from the other computer), they would eventually allow for a download after the 3rd request and 10 minutes of waiting. Do you smell a lawsuit?

I think the main problem is it's Virgin Media now. Basically 3 ISPs [2 cable, 1 ADSL, I was with cable at the time] all merged together and the board of directors from the worst company [mine was excellent] decided to run the whole show for profits rather than quality service, which is what Telewest + Virgin.net did.

I have been having pretty similar speeds tonight [higher upload than download at one point], so I'm wondering if it's the BT network that's at fault...

Well, it defenitely looked like Virgins problem. I didnt do anything with the ADSL router and this morning I did a speedtest and download was 4563 kbps and upload 378 kbps.

Hope its not going to be the same every night. I have been with Virgin for years, firstly with dial-up, then ADSL modem at 2mbps and now via wireless router at 8 mbps. Last night was worse than dial-up. Time to switch?

My Epix DSL is sometimes worse than dial-up too. I don't understand it. My computer has a lot of memory and it seems to work ok otherwise, but I have to wait a long time when I go to almost any website. Does anyone know what I could do or if it is just poor DSL service from the company?

Well........I am still on dial-up at home (have been since T-day!!!) mainly due to my own procrastination. I am currently waiting for my new setup with Verizon to activate (it takes over a week for them to do this for some reason) . Okay .....my point is I was with Cox cable and their issue is that if there are alot of users in you immediate vicinity then their clause "cannot gaurantee speeds and connection at all times" is air aparent because the line is basically "Overloaded". Which of course they do not want to admit to.
My own personal opinion would be to stay away from such providers. I am......Like I said I am on dial-up until my new service is complete......Can't tell a whole lot of difference from Cox!!!

I would love to get cable and ditch the DSL all-together. Are there any negatives to having cable or is it as fast as everyone says it is?

some providers promise the world, then dont deliever.they are fast when on line by your self,(if only)more people slower it gets.My dial up was quicker than broadband and some nights took 5 hours to hook up,(there excuse ,was old lines)tried another server, guess it was the lines after all.cable may be the answer, try not to get tied up i a long term plan just in case.went to wireless internet, only down fall,$56 per month for 1 GB, bottom line,at least im connected

Yeah, I guess I am just going to have to accept the fact that it costs a lot to have a really good internet connection. I will have to get cable and hopefully get a good deal on it.
