It could be the modem. These are the things you could do:
1: Get a new modem
2: Unplug the modem, and plug it back in

If you internet keeps going down, you should try 2. If it stays down, try 1.

Not all people can just go out and buy a modem. Besides, this time of year all tech stores are going to be packed.

In our router and modem there are settings that turn everything back to default. We had a problem recently where we were getting NO upload speed, and normal download. We ran all the test and everthing and it turns out that the modem that they we have had for years wasn't Vista compatible, and when we upgraded, it froze the IP adress and wouldn't renew. Have you upgraded recently? We had to buy a completly new modem and filters.

In my case, it defenitely seems it was Virgin. I have since had reasonable speeds but still occasionally pages cannot be displayed. Normally this is cured by disconnecting from the router and reconnecting. What confuses me is that everywhere I see people mentioning a network where a modem and router are connected. My set up is only a wireless router - wirelessly connected to 1 laptop and 1 PC. No modem or physical connections. Have I done something wrong? Everything seems to work fine.

You've done nothing wrong - it's likely that if the phone line goes into your router, the modem is built into the router.

What router model do you have? It may be that your phone line could be the fault.

Thanks Ash, its a Netgear router which is, as you say, connected directly into the phone line. Ive just checked as well and you're right, the modem is built in.

I have a Netgear router as well. What is the general consensus on this board about their quality? It seems to work ok for me most of the time.

I must say that it's the best router I've had. Many require you to reboot it every time you change a setting, but not this one. Much better than the Belkin I had. Of course, you have a few turkeys with every brand, but Netgear seems pretty solid.

Your password should either be 1234 or on the more recent models, password.
Can you take a screenshot [or paste into a Word document to preserve the table] the data on that page?

Hi Ash - here it is. I had to reboot the router earlier today cos I was getting too many 'could not dispay the page' errors 'you are not connected to the internet' - so frustrating:
