Default Wireless

i have got a computer and it is quite good. it is up stairs, and the closest phone line for the internet is downstairs. i cannot by an extra long network cable, so i will have to go with a wireless system...

i have been looking, and i have found that you can get a wireless router and a usb reciever for only £40. is this all that i need, or do i need something such as a internet card, etc.

thanks.

That would be all you need, unless your computer already has wireless.
In fact, soon I will be going for the same setup - I currently have a cable internet connection in my room, but I'll be switching to ADSL soon so the wireless router will go downstairs. I also purchased a router and USB receiver for £40 [Belkin, from Staples].

For a wireless connection, all you will need is your current modem [as long as it has Ethernet], a router and USB wireless receiver / internal card.

yo, thanks, and so what you are basically saying is that to build up a wireless system, i need:

a router,
a modem,
a usb receiver.

what about this then?
ebuyer.com - Networking » Wireless » ADSL / Broadband Modem / Routers » Product details

thanks, and this is my motherboard:
ebuyer.com - Motherboards » Motherboards Intel » Socket LGA 775 Intel » Product details

and from ebuyer.com - Welcome to the Networking store., can you try to find me any other sets that would work (and the peices can be bought separately, and not necessarily in one bulk package, like the one i suggested)!!!

thanks...

i also forgot to mention, i have pipex broadband, and i have 1 computer downstairs that already has a modem, but it is wired...

my pipex can supply a maximum of 8MB speed, so it needs to be able to support that.

thanks!!!

PS. the downstairs modem is a speedtouch connection ADSL, i think.

Well - I suggest that you get the Belkin router you linked to. Mine didn't even have a built-in ADSL modem, and I brought it for £40 from Staples [initially, without the free wireless USB dongle, but after seeing an ad in the paper I took it back and got the free dongle with it.

Plus - Belkin offers a lifetime warranty - and you don't generally even need to send the router back to them. I replaced my router under the warranty and kept the older one [kept overheating - once I had the replacement on the way I removed the shoddy heatsink inside which hadn't been installed properly and it worked fine]. If you do go for the Belkin and need the support however - when asked by the [0800, thankfully] helpline whether you want support for a networking product or all other products, select all others - the Networking option goes to India - and all other products to the UK. When I requested the replacement router, it didn't come in over a week - after discovering the UK call centre is available just by pushing another button - they told me that the address was completley wrong [and when it finally did arrive, my surname was spelt wrong. I'm sure all the hassles regarding getting my replacement were due to the Indian call centre - but the UK one was very helpful.

Regarding the speed, I'm no ADSL expert, but the internal modem should support speeds much faster than you can currently get in the UK [over standard ADSL - up to 8mb]. You might want to check however if the router lets you supply internet access via a Ethernet port instead, for when ADSL2 becomes available cheaply to most of the country.

You won't need an external modem as the router has an internal ADSL modem.
